The 1901 and 1911 are available to view on microfiche and can print copies of same.  The big problem is that they are still only accessible if you have an address.  When eventually 'online' it will be fully searchable with free access.  One of the nice aspects of the present record is that you see a copy of the actual form as filled out and signed by your forebear as opposed to the enumerators transcription forms of the english censuses.  Also some of the questions are different.  In 1911 one of the questions was how many children were born to the marriage and how many surviving and what sex.  Also they were asked how long the marriage lasted.  The 1901 census gives detailed description of the buildings and outhouses inhabitabed by the family eg "thatched, mud walled, cottage with two windows" etc.

Yes I am keeping my eye out for it - it will save a lot of legwork which is getting tedious at this stage but it is 1901 that I would like to see.

When is 'autumn' anyway? in my gardening calander it starts August 1st!

No doubt we will find out soon enough when all is ready for viewing... probably some publicity about the event.... and then it will crash for a bit!

Anne, I'm not certain that they go by gardening calanders 8)

I agree ... they're bound to have one or two teething problems at the start.

Hi

Films of the Irish census can be ordered from your local LDS church. I have just ordered one to view for 4 weeks, its costing £2.74! You do need to know the townland, I havent seen it yet so I dont know whether it will be useful to me or not, its worth a shot.

That is good tip about LDS.  I live in Dublin and there are two places at least where I can view the microfiche of census for free but problem is it is street or townland based.  A townland is a geograpical area of a couple of hundred acres and with luck, may not contain so many households especially if a rural area.  With city research, the coming computerisation of records will make things so much easier.   Maybe I will make enquires direct and see what latest news is!

I have only just started research into my County Galway grandparents and family and it is very daunting. I have been picking up tips from various forums and sites I have visited. Being in England its quite tricky. I also found my grandmother and grandfathers birth at the LDS, so I just need to send to the GRO for them. They are so helpful, the volunteers at the LDS,  I will certainly be going back!

If anyone has any tips I will accept them gratefully.
