Edward & Sophia Carey came to farm at Broyleside Farm, Ringmer, and have a memorial in Ringmer churchyard. The farm tenancy was inherited by their grandson George Carey, son of Edward & Sophia's son Joseph Akehurst Carey, who also came to Ringmer and farmed at Turnpike Farm, The Broyle, Ringmer.

Joseph Carey was a Ringmer churchwarden but George Carey and his family became mainstays of Ringmer's Congregational Chapel.

George's granddaughter Audrey Coombes left a memoir in which she mentioned that Edward Carey married Sophia Akehurst at West Firle. She adds that Edward Carey was the son of Daniel Carey of Chiddingly.

Was very interested to see your posting about the Carey family who are my relatives on my mother's side. I've done a fair bit of research into the family and would be interested to chat to anyone else who is looking into the Ringmer Careys.

Dear Fairmeadow 2 - I'm afraid I can't respond by email until I've made 3 posts. My grandmother was Florence E Carey. She was the daughter of John and Margaret Carey. John was the son of John Carey and Elizabeth Blaber and his garndparents were Edward and Sophia. As I say I have done a fair bit of research into the family and have made some visits to the village.

Dear Sally

Most of the Ringmer CAREYs from the mid-19th century onwards descend from Joseph Akehurst CAREY, another son of Edward & Sophia, so John's brother.

Edward & Sophia, together with his son John, held a tenancy of Broyleside Farm in Ringmer until Edward's death. Although his son John was with him immediately before his death, it was Joseph Akehurst CAREY's son George CAREY who succeeded to this tenancy after Edward's death.

If I can I will pm you separately with additional detail - such things as tenant right valuations following Edward's death. Edward actually rented two small farms some distance apart , but both owned by the same landlord - the second farm is at Rushey Green, Ringmer, which is where I live.

John CAREY seems previously to have been at Stoneham in South Malling parish, immediately adjoining Ringmer. South Malling parish has now been dismembered, with most of it incorporated into Lewes, but Stoneham was transferred to Ringmer.
