ROTHWELL
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 10:53 BST (UK) »
Samuel TWISS married Betty PILLING 25 June 1783 at St. Peter, Bolton, Lancs.
They had 7 Children.
The 6th child, also Samuel, married Frances ROTHWELL.

Frances was born abt. 1784 somewhere in Lancs and died 1844 Warrington.

Samuel TWISS senior remarried Mary COOPER 8 September 1800 also at St. Peter, Bolton.
Samuel and Mary had one son, Jessie.  He was known as Jessie TWIST.
Jessie married Hannah (Anne) ROTHWELL.
Hannah was born 1 Nov 1811, Ramsbottom, Lancs and died in Australia 1859.

Hannah was the daughter of Peter ROTHWELL and Hannah LORD.
I have no idea who the parents of Frances ROTHWELL were.
Am hoping someone can help.

Hi Jackie,

There is an extracted record for a Frances Rothwell christened 6 Dec 1790 at St James, Birch in Rusholme, Lancs.  Parents John Rothwell and Betty.  See http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

not sure if this is helpful, but the Rothwells are quite a well known family in the Bolton area of Lancashire - Richard Rainford Rothwell - lawyer, Landowner and Philanthropist, QC, died in Regents Park London, lived at Sharples Hall Bolton, was made Marquis de Rothwell by Victor Emmanuel, King of Italy etc.  This is 1800s but an old family.  My own interest is limited - I think he was involved in developing the street I live in about 1800.
Hope this helps -ignore if irelevant.

Thanks for that Maggie.

Bernardf, that's fascinating information.  I had no idea.
I must admit that I'm only starting on the ROTHWELL line now because of my 2 ladies who married 1/2 brothers.

I do know that Peter ROTHWELL and Hannah LORD had 4 children....maybe more, I don't know.

Hannah (Anne) b. 1 Nov 1811 Ramsbottom, Lancs.
Richard b. 16 Jun 1807 Bolton.
Both Hannah and Richard died in Australia.
James and Jesse - I have no details on except their names and an Edmondson descendant here in Aust. was told by his father before his death.

So, any information is great and in your case, very very interesting.

Thanks

Jackie

have fun.
Sorry don't know more about Rothwells - I only came across the guy I mentioned as he is probably one of the people involved in building/renting the street of cottages I live in - he owned 7 of the houses and rented them out on the Brindle tithe map 1830s. but if it's the right man, he was quite a famous London lawyer (Queens Counsel) living in Regents Park and had the Sharples Hall in Bolton as well as a substantial property business.  I understand he was 'honoured' by Victor Emmanuel for his 'donations to charity and the revolutionists' in Italy.  I think this would have been when Italy got unified(?).  There's lots of little bits on the net about him including his family - try Marquis de Rothwell in Google.
All the best,
Bernard

Hello Jackie,

I'm sorry to say, I don't have any information on your Jessie 'Twist', I was not aware that Samuel had remarried.

I would be most interested  though, in any information you have on Samuel Twiss and Betty Pulling, his first wife, and their 7 children, of which I only had 3, Samuel ,Joseph and Ann , I have their son Samuel born in 1783 married to Frances Rothwell,!!! what year was your Samuel born?

I am interested in the Twiss family as they are part of my extended family, Samuel and Betty's great grandson, Joseph, married Jane Longmore, one of my ancestors.

Maybe we can exchange information.
