edith may hayward
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 10:13 BST (UK) »
hello,im searching for the family of edith may hayward born 1900,she married harry bradford 31/10/1925 at Wareham registry office.his father was thomas joseph bradford, carter and her father was william hayward(deceased),dairyman.ive managed to trace thomas josephs family back in the swanage area on the census, but the only edith may in dorset with father william has him born 1860 marnhull, occupation labourer on the road.not knowing the geography of the area,im not sure how far from wareham this is.also, the occupations different, but this was long before the marriage.and she may not have been born in dorset anyway.if anyone can suggest a more likely family id be very grateful, thanks, nel.

Hi Nelwild,

You can search the 1901 and 1911 censuses by occupation. Both of them have very few William Haywards who are Dairymen, and there's only one in Dorset.

1901
RG13/1975 66 7
West Parley, Dorset

William Hayward, head, wid, 52, Dairyman, b. Fawley Hants
Elizabeth Redman, housekeeper, wid, 35, b. Wedmore Somerset
Elizabeth Redman, head, mar, 2, b. do.

I don't have access to the 1911 census details, but it seems that William and Elizabeth (now also called Hayward I believe) have an Edith age 11 in their household. Might be worth checking... I'm hoping this is the same William anyway - he's only age 54 in 1911 apparently

 :)

tati, many thanks for that.it looks promising apart from the age descrepancy, bur mistakes like that did happen.an elderly relative of mine has suggested edith might have been from somerset.she was my g-grandmother,and the only info i have at the moment is from her marriage cert, and the birth certificate of my grandfather who was born 5 years earlier in 1920.he was illigitimate,so i have no marriage info to refer to for his birth father.i think i need to find edith mays birth certificate, but not knowing exactly where she was born makes it a bit difficult, will probably be trial and error finding a father william whose a dairyman.any more help appreciated, regards, nel.

The 1911 census census should tell you her birth place if you have some credits to invest  :)

Yes, it's pretty expensive. Transcripts "only" cost 10 credits but you get less information (and their transcriptions are the worst I've ever seen too  :-X)

Just using the free search, it seems that Edith's birth place is somewhere in Dorset. Which isn't any help help, really, because I can't seem to find a matching birth registration.

I'm not sure William Hayward and Elizabeth Redman ever married therefore we might be searching for an Edith May Redman birth registration instead of Edith May Hayworth. There is one Edith May Redman registered Axbridge Sep 1900 (covers Wedmore where Elizabeth was born) but I can't identify this girl in 1901.

Sorry, I'm not being much help  :(

Hi Nelwild
Have you any luck finding anything out about Edith May Hayward? I have someone by this name in my tree, born 1890 in Pewsham, Wiltshire.
Let me know if we may have a match
Thank you
