John Laverty Loughguile history

John Laverty was born in Castlequarter (Loughguile parish) and was married to a    McClements. They had 4 family - John who died in his 20s, James who was a shoemaker and did not marry, Biddy (Margaret) who married John McGill and had 4 sons, and Henry - my GGF, who went on to marry Margaret Dillon and had 6 of a family. Famly were - Jane, Mary Ann, Ellen, James, Margaret and John - I have most of the history of these familys apart from Mary Ann. She married Robert Kemp and they had 3 family - Robert, Jack and Fred but do not have any more info.

James the shoemaker / farmer is on the 1911 census as living in Tobernagola - part of Castlequarter in the parish of Loughguile.

Grateful if anyone has any more info about John's parents or any other relations in the family.

Do you have any idea of dates? it's rather difficult to suggest where to check next without having an idea of period.

John Laverty died 4/4/1865 - date found on Will on PRONI website. I have requested the Death Cert to see what it says. Not sure when born. He left money to James (Son) the Shoemaker who never married.

Henry was born around 1836 and died 29/3/1911 - he is buried in Loughguile. I found the 1911 census return online showing Margaret (Dillon) as Head of Family as census taken 2/4/1911!

Mary Ann born 30/9/1860 and married in 1890 to Robert Kemp.

Grateful for any help esp. on John's parents going back into 1700's or the McClements line.
John also remarried after McClements to a Boyd but think they did not have any family.

Family links are - Loughguile, Castlequarter, Tobernagola. Also Lisanore (Lissanoure).

I know some time has elapsed since an active post on this topic but I have just spotted this one recently.

My Great Grandfather was the Robert (James) Kemp you mention, my Grandfather Robert was one of his sons who appears on the 1901 and 1911 census in Loughguile.  Mary Ann Laverty (Kemp) appears to have left Antrim for a time with her husband who was an RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) Constable who served in Co. Antrim (1881-1890 where he met Mary Ann) and Co. Donegal (1890-1897).  After Robert Kemp was discharged from RIC in 1897 Mary Ann appears to have returned alone to live with relatives (Dan McCambridge and wife Ellen who was Mary Ann's sister) in Loughguile though she does not appear on either 1901 or 1911 census!

Robert (James) Kemp was originally a farmers son from Cavan (he was born approx 1860).  He was Protestant in faith but later became RC per Church marriage and RIC records.

As far as I know Mary Ann lived to an old age and is buried in the graveyard in Dunloy Co. Antrim which is in the Loughguile area.

Hi Loughguile,

I have replied to your post on the Cavan forum - thanks very much for the information.  I have just noticed that my Grandfather Robert (Henry) Kemp perhaps called Henry after Mary Ann's father, had John Laverty and Ellen Laverty as his Baptism sponsors on 30/11/1890.

The same Priest Rev D. H. Burke who married Robert (James) Kemp and Mary Ann appearing as Marrianne on the Marriage Cert - father's name listed as Henry, (one of the witnesses was Mrs Margaret Laverty) baptised Robert and Fred.  He also married Robert (Henry) Kemp to Ann Connolly my grandmother  on 26/12/1918 in St Joseph's Church in Belfast - there is a note to that effect on Robert Henry's Baptism cert.
