Police 1900's
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 21:25 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if becoming a Policeman in the 1900's was a strict as it is today? - My Gt Grandfather who I cannot
locate the death of or what happened to him, went to prison
3 times - 1898,1899 & 1901 (theft every time) the only person with same name and age - John Luton b1879 comes up on the 1911 census as a Policeman. I know he married in 1901 and that his wife was with someone else by 1904. :'(

Hi

I would think exactly the same rules applied as they do today re: criminal records

Is he the one b Bethnal Green 1879 but shown on the 1911 with a birthyear of 1880

He was a costermonger in 1901

Hi Carol,   Yes he's the one - a right rogue by all accounts. I think he must have ended up on a ship to somewhere because his daughter (my nan) said he was ships captain!
(ha! ha!) and I suppose it's possible thats what her Mum told her.
Thanks

The 1911 entry shows a birthplace of Bermondsey and the 1901 has a John Luton b Bermondsey 1880 occ commercial clerk

I think you have found a different John Luton on the 1911

I dont know about England, but when i was at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow searching poor relief records they had police cnsus records...i thought it meant crimes but it was actually census returns for all police officers as in those days they lived in houses provided by or paid for by the police. Might be something to look into for your area.
Areas: Moneymore, Magherafelt, Donegal, to Glasgow
Names: Moran, Gallagher, Mcgettigan
