Nearest Catholic Cemeteries to Kent St, Sydney
« on: Monday 03 August 09 03:59 BST (UK) »
HI

Needing some help, I've had a look myself but can't find anything.  I have an ancestor James McLaughlin who was buried 18 July 1860. His residence was Kent St, Sydney.  He was buried in 'Catholic Ground' by Undertaker T Dixon.  Just wondering which cemetery this might be?  Any help would be very much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Kate

He's not at Rookwood.

Hi Kate,
Siouxsie is right, it would have been the Devonshire Street cemetery (I think officially it was the Sydney Burial Ground).   Rookwood wasn't opened until the late 1860s (from memory).  There was a section of the Devonshire St site set aside for Catholics and this was the only place available for official burials in Sydney at the time of your ancestor's death.

When the Town Hall was being built in 1901, the old Burial Ground was cleared, and the bodies (not sure if all of them) were removed to other cemeteries.  The headstones (again, not sure how many) were removed to Bunnerong (now the Eastern Suburbs cemetery).

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Prue

Not a problem Prue.

I didn't know either date. I was just sitting thinking that the Town Hall architecture looked much older than 1900s and decided to have a look see.

HI All

Thank you so much for all this information.  I will now be able to at least see if he and his wife are listed, before I had no idea where to look ???.  I really appreciate all your replies.

Again Thanks

Kate
