I think Government House is the one attached to the Garrison church.

You are so good to spend your time doing this.

It was later used as the headquarters for the Electric Co. Actually a 'series of buildings, the main house being a rather grand, ornate structure behind iron railings' (taken from the history in Portsmouth website).

No idea if that helps or not!  ???

Railings is good  :) Now I can stop squinting at so many shots and just concentrate on places with railings.

Good? Me? It's fun, to be honest. I get to look at some really mental images! Just seen a lady walking down Pompey High St, or somewhere, with a Bustle!  And as for what I can only imagine was once the Gosport Ferry?!  :o

Incidentally; Yeppers. " Government House " was indeed attached to the Garrison Chapel. The other place I had in mind was " Buckingham House ". Bugger  :(

Never mind. I'm still looking. Loads to go yet and those railings will help. I have a great shot of the hotel ~ if only the doughnut had swung round and snapped the other side of the road!

Maybe i should pop round sometime and have a squiz myself as I know what I'm looking for?  ;D

I did think it would be a long shot, but deffo worth a try. If you do track one down you'll be worth your weight in gold. Worth it but unlikely to get it! ;)

:( Gutted! Don't appear to have one. Sorry.

I do have a shot of St Georges Square. Some railinged buildings showing on the corner there. But, they're pretty uniform, so that wouldn't be it.

As a last ditch effort, ye might try Stephen Pomeroy. He has photo's I don't. Maybe e mail him and enquire directly? There's some brilliant Local Historians in Pompey. Stephen's one.

 His photo's are Here.

Regards popping round for a look through all this stuff? If only! I'd Love someone in Pompey to sort through some of this gear, with a more familiar eye. Ye'd be bound to recognise places I've forgotten the identity of.

Unfortunately, if ye are in Pompey? Popping to my place might prove a bit hectic. I'm now in Co. Leitrim, Eire!  ;D

Oh well thankee kindly, kind sir for the effort.

Yeah popping round may be a trifle difficult if you're not actually in Pompey :P

Best wishes, D

Hi,
Just found your posting, I'm trying to get as much information as I can regarding my GGG Grandfather Lawrence Ellison who was in the 59th Regiment of Foot, posted at Portsmouth for a number of years, from around 1834 through until 1845 when he died at the Garrison Hospital, Portsmouth.

If you've got any old photographs of around the area where he would have been, that you could share with me, would really appreciate that.

JanJim; Forgive me. It's 'Late', where I'm coming from .....

But, I believe ye talking about a place I have shots of  ;)  Military Hospital. Cosham. North of Portsmouth? Since known as Queen Alexandra's?

Please shoot me a line, just to remind me of this. I'll see what I have.

Looks like a file that could use narrowing down .....
