Steve; I couldn't work out that Clive Road bit either! Couldn't remember where it was, off hand. And I had quite enough on my mind without bothering about it.

Barrack Row, I worked out, was just to the south side of St Tom's. It ran down to where all the walls and stuff remain today. I'm not too good on Old Portsmouth ~ never liked the place, to be honest with ye. So, I can't remember enough to try and visualise where it would've been. I see the roof tops in that water painting though.

Steve, as an aside; Whet ye reckon on some of those images of " The old road into Portsmouth "?  :o Makes ye think, when ye realise that Pompey was once the size of a football pitch and ye entered it over a bridge and under a tunnel!

Steve...old road into Pompey...makes me yearn for a return to them thar days..well sometimes..nearest thing to open spaces are now ironically football pitches :)..excluding Farlington Marshes which we've discussed.

Well i can say that i'm beat on this one..unless Longstore etc are/were known by other names it doesn't ring anything with me...few of ye photos could be possibilities but no more than that.

I say i'm beat but then again i expect i/you will go on until some sort of answer is forthcoming...remember Black Patch and me..now that's confused some people....there are a lot of Long Barracks that crop up????

Only hope anyone's got of getting any closer to the locations is old maps, mate. Pompey Central might have some. Trouble is, none of us is within range of there any more!

Very earliest references I can find all talk about the area being razed, donkeys ago. I once tried to find the barracks one of mine was in. Thus I've done all this before, see? Same result. I could only approximate the area  :(

(Bloody hell! Got a Meadow Pipit sneaking about, right outside my window here!)

I'd think any records / maps the military might have had would also have long since been handed to the library / records office and quite possibly since lost. Unless Winchester holds anything? Don't know if Tiki could get onto them by email ....?

Right are you ready...as far as i can see (Portsmouth encyclo)King William's Place ran S E from St Nicholas Street to the fortifications on the N E side..Clarence Barracks.
On S W side from N to S the  Rose and Crown (St Nicholas Road corner) and Dukes Head Tavern W corner opposite fotifications.
King William Place was previously known as Barrack Row and is what is now on todays maps as possibly Peacock Lane off of Pembroke Road.
I think this is the right place as nearly opposite KWP there was a King William Gate which was demolished around 1860.

Now for a picture..thats the hard bit..i think i have one somewhere of Pembroke Road around mid - late 1800's..what about you Steve..must sign off for now.

Location cracked i knew we'd get there 8)

Have you any old photo's of St. Mary's, Portsea?  I have found new one's on the web, but if you have any older one's I would be most grateful if you could share one.
