Hi again, also possibly look into this death:-

Emmaley Adeline Whitehair March qtr 1854 Bermondsey 1d 71?

Keyboard86

PS how do you know he was not a widower by 1861as you have shown already a possible death, which I confirmed in 1854?

Also William and Amanda in 1861 are dittoed from the family above them, so possibly an enumerators error!

Susannah Sarah Gingell was incorrectly transcribed on the 1851 as Singel but somebody called Pamela Thickett has notified a transcription error so may be researching the same family and can perhaps throw some additional info your way.

The 1851 shows her b 1831 Bermondsey Surrey

Crikey! You have been so busy Carole & Keyboard86 - thank you. I need to write all this down to see exactly how this lot fits together....and to see exactly how many wives we have in the loop at the moment and whether any of them were bigamous!

I have been out all day so haven't had a chance to look at the Ship's Lists yet, but I will as I would really like to know when he went to America!

Hope to get on to this tomorrow.

Regards to all.

The christian name Amanda was not a particularly common one back in the 1850's so my personal thoughts are as follows:

The 1861 found by Keyboard for William & Amanda is the correct entry.  The 1851 has no possible match to a Suffolk birthplace so I suspect the 1861 enumerator has made an error.

My only (slight) reservation is his occupation at that time.  However, Amanda's 1866 marriage cert shows her father's occ as "gentleman".  He also appears to be one of the witnesses unless that is her half brother who was also William (James) Russell Whitehair.

For whatever reason, he separated from Susannah but if they separated pre-1861 - did they "reconcile" and have George born 1863 or did Susannah have a fling ???
