Amanda Mary Ann Whitehair-UPDATE
« on: Tuesday 01 March 05 00:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
Good news! Amanda Mary Ann Whitehair did not land from outer space!    She was born 18/11/1845

I have finally found her parents' names - Phew!
Mother: Mary Ann Whitehair (what a surprise ::) formerly Connelly
Father: William Russell Whitehair - shoe maker
Address: 6, Wood Street, Grays Inn Lane district, St Pancras.

Just thought I'd share this info and thanks for your help in the past. My computer has been playing up and I haven't been able to use the internet for over a week, so it's time to do some catching up.
Best wishes
Sue

I can't point to the records for this but i understand from my father, his great grandson, that William Russell Whitehair did emigrate to America because he was wanted as a Chartist activist, leaving his wife and children. His wife received one letter saying he was in Chicago but heard noting else. Until I saw your posts, it was thought that he had died in the Chicago fire. If you have found anything else about this i would be grateful. He had a son, William, in who i am particularly interested, thanks.

Dear All,

Thank you for 'resurrecting' this thread - I had hit a wall and had left this part of the family alone for some considerable time, so I will need to dig out some more detailed, old paperwork.

I do, however, have William Russell's parents as George Whitehair and Matilda Brown (married 20th July 1845 Old Church. St Pancras), as mentioned by Trish and I think that Mary Ann Whitehair, the wife that it looks as if William R left behind when he emigrated, died in 1854 Bermondsey (although I have no proof of this as yet). I also have an older brother for William R. - John Whitehair bpt 30th June 1816.

Fishingtackle, was his son William born in America, son of Elinor?

Regards
Sue

Hi all, was this therefore William, Mary and Amanda in 1851?

William WHITCHAN 30 occ Shoemaker b St Pancras
Mary 27 b St Pancras
Amanda 5 b St Pancras
Emily 2 months b Bermondsey
Residing 32, Salisbury Street, Bermondsey
Census ref HO107/1560/216/32

And in 1861,a William R Whitehair 40 Widower occ Assurance Agent b Bury Suffolk with daughter AMANADA 16 also born Bury Suffolk
Residing at 10, Charles Street, Southwark
Census ref RG09/334/159/3

? Is the 1861 the same family?

Burial Mary Ann Whitehair b abt 1825 19th October 1854 aged 29 at St James, Bermondsey.

Something tells me this has already been done and dusted, ie Amanda M A marries a Daniel Felix Haines 21st May 1866 Holy Trinity Newington, oh well it may help a future researcher!!

Many thanks for the additional bits of information, folks.

Keyboard86, I am not sure whether the family in the 1861 census is the same family or not - the names are correct, they were living in a similar area of London, but the place of birth for both William and Amanda being born in Bury, Suffolk is a bit confusing as, to my knowledge, Amanda was born in St Pancras and died shortly after giving birth to Amy Georgiana's birth in 1870. Amanda's death was in 1871 St Saviour (Southwark), aged 26, in Southwark - same area as the 1861 census that you found but my William R wasn't actually a widower at that time.....interesting conundrum!

1851 census - I hadn't heard of Emily, but looking at births on FreeBMD I found these:
Births Mar 1851   (>99%)
Whitehair    Emily Adeline        Bermondsey 4 9
Births Mar 1855   (>99%)
Whitehair    Emily Matilda        St Pancras 1b   110

The name Emily Adeline caught my eye as my Grandmother was Adeline Agnes Haines...after her great Aunt perhaps, but on the other hand there is Emily Matilda, named after her paternal grandmother, Matilda nee Brown. I can only surmise that Emily b1851 might have died as an infant and 2nd Emily was named after her..........I need to do some more research I think!

Thanks again for everybody's input and for the details from the marriage cert., CaroleW.

I think I also need to check the ships' lists to find out exactly when William emigrated to America - a bit too late to start that now, so a job for the weekend, I think.

Sue
