1851, 1861 Census - GILBERT
« on: Monday 28 February 05 23:48 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for Phillip GILBERT and his wife Elizabeth, nee DAVIES.

Phillip was born 14 May 1825 in Wales and Elizabeth was born 29 Nov 1832.  I found out today that their daughter Margaret GILBERT was born 10 Jun 1861 in Ty Mawr, Gallygare/Gallygear, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.  Very exciting news, as until now, all I knew is that they were from somewhere in Wales.

Before Margaret was born in 1861, they had at least four other daughters, Alice b. abt. 1851; Mary b. abt. 1853; Sarah b. abt. 1856 and Anna b. abt. 1858.

A coal miner, Phillip emigrated to Tioga county, PA in 1863, where he died in 1906.  Elizabeth and her first 5 daughters and son Thomas followed in 1864.

I would greatly appreciate a lookup on the 1861 and 1851, maybe even the 1841 census.  Any information on nearby GILBERTS would also be welcome - it seems to be a fairly uncommon name in Wales.

THANK YOU!

Rhys,
Bless you!  I'm sure the 1861 census info is my family.  I forgot to mention that Phillip GILBERT's (the one b. 1825) parents are listed as Philip GILBERT and Margaret WILLIAMS on his death certificate, so the 1841 census info may not be the right family, or possibly given the ages, that Philip might be the grandson or nephew of John and Mary GILBERT - does the 1841 census give relationships to the head of family?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Hello
unfortunately the 1841 census gives no
family relationships,

Rhys

Poking around some more on the web today, I found the marriage record of Phillip GILBERT and Elizabeth DAVIES - 1 Jun 1850 in Panteg, Monmouthshire.  The father of Phillip is listed as John GILBERT, so I think your 1841 lookup may be correct and the death certificate incorrect.

If you see John or Mary GILBERT in the 1851 or 1861 census, I'd love to know.

Thank you for your help.
