Dalbeattie: puzzled!
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 18:32 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am pursuing my Irving ancestors and they give Dalbeattie as the place of birth before leaving for Liverpool. They don't say which Dalbeattie. Is there any way of telling which, as I gather there are two. Also as there is only a Scottish census listed for 1901 what site do I need to find Irvings before that date in Scotland? I do want to be able to find them myself rather than some kind person doing it for me, but I am a bit nonplussed where to start having found not a lot in the usual census returns. Well, I say not a lot, but for eg I have six brothers, have found info for two who left Scotland and nothing for the others or the sisters.
Thanks, Catherine
Lancashire: Read, Carter, Bayman; Yorkshire: Pearson, Warcup, Batty; Derbyshire/Notts: Carver; Liverpool: Carver; Scotland: Irving (Dalbeattie), Aitken, Crawford, Wilkie (Argyll).

Hi Catherine

The IGI on www.familysearch.org covers most of the statutory registrations 1855-circa 1875, so try there first but the other main source is the pay to view site:

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

There are also guidance note on where to start with scottish research on the top of this board.

Regards

Gadget

PS - I think it is likely to be Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire

When you get back to beyond 1855, it would be the parish of Urr:

Thanks for those sites, Gadget. I just went back through all I have and next to one name I have Dumfries, but am no longer sure whether that came from a record, so those sites should help a lot, many thanks.

If you do need help with any looks ups or other general help, Catherine, just ask. I  know what fun it is to discover ancestors yourself and won't bore you with all the Irvings in Dalbeattie    :)

However, if it's any help, I do have the monumental inscriptions for Urr/Dalbeattie, so give a yell if you need any look ups in them.

One of my lines came from Kirkcudbrightshire.

Good luck

OK, Gadget, Will do! With this dreadful weather I am getting a lot done, and have added over 100 to me tree in a week, so it would be nice to try and complete this line properly.
Cheers, Catherine

Hello Gadget , my name is Dave and I see you have the monumental inscriptions for Urr and Dalbeattie.  I have them for Colvend if you want them.

Would you be able to do me a favor And look up the following?  My wife’s great grandfather was called John Murdoch and he died in Dalbeattie in 1910. We have his death certificate and obituaries and I know he is buried in Dalbeattie but I don’t know who with.

John Murdoch’s death certificate says he was 70 when he died, but the obituaries say 71, so I don’t know what is right.

We visited Dalbeattie 5 years ago and thought it was lovely, but will never get the chance to go back.

Would it be possible if you could look up John Murdoch to see who he’s buried with and at what plot number.

Thank you so much for your time and let me know if you want Colvend monumental inscriptions.  My email is (*)

Dave
