Lanarkshire Obituaries/Death Notices
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 17:14 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I've not yet looked up any obituaries/death notices for any of my family as most were poor so they may not have had them but I've been thinking of doing this when I have the time as it's always worth a try so I'd like to learn more about it.

I've been wondering about the history of obituaries/death notices in Lanarkshire and Glasgow in particular; is there any information available on this?  I'm mainly wondering when it became widespread for even the poorer of society to have a notice in the local paper.

I know that the Mitchell Library holds copies of most of the Glasgow papers that would have obits/death notices in them but are there any online resources?  I know some newspapers have online archives but the ones I've seen only go back as far as the 1990s and I wouldn't expect them to go further back without a subscription service.

Did smaller Glasweigan newspapers that were more specific in terms of the areas they served exist at any point and could people have had their death notices in them as opposed to in the larger, and presumably more expensive, ones such as The Evening Times/Herald?  I would be looking for notices for people who died in Dennistoun, Calton, Bridgeton, St Rollox, Pollockshields and Garngadhill.  Additionally I had a lot of people in Hamilton but I know The Hamilton Advertiser archives are held at Hamilton Central Library so I would need to go there to look at those.   Thanks for any help.

Regards

Michelle

Hi Sancti,

Thanks for your reply.  There's a large number of people I'd like to search for so I thought it would be best to try to find out how to go about it myself; I assumed I'd need to get to the Mitchell to do it at some point. I'll post a few of the ones I'm most interested in below though and if there's any way you can help that would be great:

Janet Cullen, Aged 41, Died 21st Jun 1873 at 415 Gallowgate, Glasgow (High Church)

Fraser Campbell, Aged 17, Died 18th Nov 1905 at 30 Charlotte Street, Glasgow (Blackfriars)

John McPherson Campbell, Aged 67, Died 9th Feb 1919 at 49 Market Street, Glasgow (Calton)

Janet Kerr Stevenson Campbell (nee Cullen), Age 69, Died 22nd Apr 1933 at 63 Plantation Street, Glasgow (Pollockshields)

Ann Houston died 11 Aug 1894 Dennistoun, Glasgow

Thomas Wilson died 12 April 1910 Garnagadhill, Glasgow

Any clues on which papers would be the best to look at for possible obituaries/death notices would be really helpful.

Regards

Michelle

I can't see anything in the Glasgow Herald for the deaths before 1913

Hi Sancti,

Thanks for that information - can I ask how you can search the Herald online?  I've only seen an Archive section dating back to 1998 on their website.

Thanks Sancti - that website looks very interesting.  At least I now know I can discount the Herald for the people above so thanks for looking.

Hi Michelle,

The Gale website has a lot of newspaper archives, including the Glasgow Herald from 1820 to 1900. Some libraries or colleges have subscriptions to Gale.

You can also access the Gale database by joining Lancashire Libraries online. You are given your number immediately and are then sent a card in the post.
