Poor Relief Records

I am looking for a young man that had his parents die
and was living with his grandparents in 1872 he was age
7 he had his grandparents die 1876 me may have had
to go to a workforce or something and therefore possibly
have a Poor Relief Record ...He was born in Bedford
and lived there all his young years but lost him after grams
deaths...Born in 1864 William Arthur Collett
could some one tell me if there was a Orphan work house
or where PR's are...Crookedtail

Poor Relief records were kept in the Parish Chest in the local parish church, and it was the Warden's duty to keep them up to date. Apparently most have now been placed in local records offices - it might be worth travelling to Bedford and having a nose around the records office =)

I was actually in Bedford library yesterday looking up my own stuff, I took a look for your dude but was unable to find a thing. I asked about poor relief records, and according to the librarian it would be pretty near impossible to find - even if you found the right parish, and the right year, then the child would more than likely be listed only by christian name or apparently might be given the surname of the place they were given a free apprenticeship (or take the masters) ... this is where the librarians own name came from when a over a number of years a barrel maker sent food for, and finally took in + apprenticed her great grandfather or great great grandfather...he was given the surname Cooper because of it.

All very interesting stuff but I'm afraid it doesn't help you very much. Sorry!


I'm going back at some point next week, if there's any other info that could help you?

Have you checked the LDS catalogue at www.familysearch.org to see if the parish chest entries for the various Bedford parishes have been filmed. If so you can order and view them at your nearest LDS Family History Centre, of which there are many in the US.

If he was put in the Union House (workhouse) there may be admission records. These would probably be held by Bedford Records Office - see http://www.rootschat.com/links/06d5/
They operate a research service for which there would be a charge

However if he was still living with his step grandfather until 1879 when he was 15 it's quite possible that he was independent and didn't need to go into the workhouse

How sure are you that Mr Paterson was his father? Almost a year from his birth to his mother's marriage suggests that he may not have been.

Thanks for the information....

yur question how sure...well Robert lived in Bedford threw
the year 1863 -1865 William was born March 1864 and they were married Jan 31,1865 so a 90% but keeping a open mind ...i have just sent for his birth..and his brother  had him listed on his poor relief in Scotland...If you check out my other post the one on Bedford Lookups at the top of the page and open it  you will see my post listed as Help search Poor Relief Rocords...as mention above...that will explain alot...

No the 1871 Census is the only one i have found with him
listed...It is really is hard due to his date of birth coming
in between census's and not knowing his name of either
Collett or Paterson...I hope birth cert will answer some of
the questions...I have his brother 13 in 1880 going to
Quarrie in Canada and i have found his marriage and move
to New York,USA clear to 1930 so far...I hope that William
and him were able to know each other...they did till the
Colletts died and their Uncle David Paterson went to USA in 1881  as he use to see both boys when they were little....no
other contact that i know of ...Crookedtail
