double check plz
« on: Wednesday 29 July 09 16:34 BST (UK) »
Can one of you good ppl do a double check for me....
the family I am searching were mostly all born and lived Northumberland, in the Alnwick, Morpeth, Amble area

I have my grt grt grand parents :-
Ralph Armstrong born 1841 Mitford
Mary Spavin born 1840 Embleton

Ralph's parents I 1st had down as :-
Ralph Armstrong born 1780 Hatton
Elizabeth Trapps born 1824 Hexham
( but Ralph was down as born in Hexham with this family)

Now I found in a 1851 census a family living in Felton. the surnames were transcribed wrong.....
it it should read as follows :-

John Young Head age 33 born Scotland,
Eliza Young Wife age 39 born walkworth,
Mary Ann Armstrong Dau 12 born North Long Horsley,
Ralph Armstrong Son 10 born North Mitford,
William Armstrong Son 7 born North Mitford.

the diff surnames is baffling I do have a copy of the census if this helps anyone.... but my gut instincts say that this is they family I want...
I think I have put all info on here but if anyone need any more just ask..

I would be most grateful if someone could double check this for me and take me out of my misery and ease my aching bad head.....

Hi maz

I think it's just a case of Ralph's father having died and Eliza remarrying

1841 census: HO107 Piece 835 Book 3 Folio 4 Page 3
High & Low Highlaws Farms, West, Mitford, Highlaws, Northumberland

ARMSTRONG
James   25   Hind
Eliza      25
John        6
Margaret  4
Mary Ann  2
Ralph    4 months
Mary GILLEN 10  female servant
all born Northumberland

Whether it's your family or not is not certain, you would need Ralph's birth cert or his marriage cert to find his father's name and occupation

In 1861 Ralph is still at home, but all the family is listed under the surname Young

RG 9 Piece 3874 Folio 84    Page 37     and the family is living in Hadstone, Northumberland
- I can give full details if you don't have access

I think the best thing would be to get Ralph & Mary's marriage cert then you would be sure
Dec 1866     Alnwick    10b   500
ARMSTRONG  Ralph      SPAVIN    Mary A

Sounds like the right family then, and for 1861 you need to look under surname YOUNG with the reference I gave.

I was researching a family where the same thing happened, the mother remarried and the children took the step-father's surname, then when the son married he reverted to his original surname.

Let me know if you still have trouble finding the 1861 census

Hi maz

I was hoping you would find them as I can't read the birthplaces too well - so I'm guessing, (I think the enumerator was too, or just having a bad pen day)
will have to look at the gazetteer!

Just enter Ralph Young and Northumberland Hadstone for residence, it should appear for you

1861 RG 9 Piece 3874 Folio 84    Page 37
Hadstone Northumberland
John Young     head 44   Drainer     Scotland Lanarkshire
Eliza Young    wife   49                   Hauxley Northumberland
Mary A Young    dau   22  At Home    Linden         "
Ralph Young    son   20  Drainer      Heighley         "
William Young       "    17        "               "              "
Eliza Young     dau   9  At Home     East Edington   "
Thomas R Young son 5         "          Swarland

edit: have modified some of the birthplaces

Hi Maz,

don't know if this helps or hinders the headache

There is a baptism in Mitford (Bishops transcripts) for Ralph Armstrong -
28 Feb. 1841, to James and Eliza Matthews of High Heighly, father Hind.

IGI have a baptism for Mary Ann in Long Horsley (extracted) for 22 Feb. 1839, parents James Armstrong and Eliza.

Unfortunately the only baptism I can find in Mitford for a William shows him baptised on 28 Jan 1844 - illegitimate son of Eliza Armstrong  ???

Hi Barbara,

Hauxley is OK, Linden is, I think, in Longhorsley parish and I suspect that Nigkley is a bad transcript for Heighly/Heighley.

Not sure about East Ekington - have to look that one up myself  :)
