Immigration from England
« on: Wednesday 29 July 09 14:53 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Could someone help me on this one  please.......

There are immigration records online for people arriving in Australia during the 1800s.

Is there such records available in England of those people when they left.

John.

Passenger lists for ships leaving England for Australia and other places outside Europe start in 1890.
There may be occasional mentions of people in other records, particularly for those who needed assistance with their travel. For example, looking through A2A finds occasional references such as:

Quote
partially completed form of application for emigration of Rich. Law, farm labourer, and family to S. Australia, 1848

Quote
f.51 resolution to expend £10 on fitting out John Standing and Peter Barnett for emigration to Australia, 1842;

Hello  there John

So  you  are wanting to know  if a person left Australia  to  go and live in England would  there be records?

I  know there are  some in Victoria and  other passenger lists available.

How about  you  give us a name and age and where  they lived in Australia  then  we can see if we can help you  further

Hi All,

Many thanks for your replys.
What I meant was that for example. My Great Grandmother arrived in Australia 1853 from England. There are records of her when she arrived,, now to clarify that was her would there be matching records in England to look up when she left for Australia.

Regards,
John.

Hello John

Sometimes the shipping lists will show where the person came from (town or village or county) their occupation, their religion, whether they are literate, and occasionally the name of their parent/s.  It depends on which Australian state they landed in and whether they were 'assisted' (i e the government or  an employer) paid for them to come.  There were often much better records kept for those who were assisted.  Different States kept records differently and some are much easier to access than others.  They go back to first white settlement in most cases, but there are many missing.

However they can give good information to back-track, using the UK census, free BMD, IGI etc to see if people can be located in UK, depending on the amount of background info and, often, whther they have a very common name.

As Jenn said, if you give us the name and any info you have we may be able to help find her for you.

Cheers, Judith
