Do you know the forename of the other witness? It's a pity there is not another capital T anywhere to compare. But I can see the h & o & a tall s if the first letter is capital T. There is a capital H on the registrar's name - Harrison - although this looks written by a different person to the rest of the certificate.

I think I have answered my own question!!! Looks like the witness was William's mother Hannah.

I found the Rice family in 1841 in Dalgleish St Limehouse [as I am sure you have]:

William 45 Blacksmith
Hannah 45 Ind
William 15 cabinet maker
Jane 13
none of them born in county

HO 107/701/7/16

So the forename of the other witness does not begin with H. FWIW I go with Thos.

Could it, with any stretch of the imagination, be 'Ricd.' - abbreviation for 'Richard'?

There is another CARR family at HO107/716-13/59/30 Is Whitechapel near Stepney?

Hello to you all

Thank you all for taking the time to look at my posting, I have found the Rice family with Hannah. also the other family Thomas & Jane.Carr.  Have looked until I have square eye's,   I thought it could be Herb,  I suppose it could be a middle name or just a name to which he was known, any thoughts on this one?.

The 1841 census with Thomas and Mary is a good possibility as Ann could be living away from home and in service. Thomas being a cordwainer which is a Bootmaker.

Will look on the early  Census to see names of bootmakers with surname Carr.

I also found on IGI an Ann Carr parents Bengamin & Elizabeth
