LING / McCALLUM - Tracing Living relatives COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 23:12 BST (UK) »
Hello - this is a huge longshot we are trying to trace an Australian branch to our family which we lost touch with.  This is what we know:-

Ivor Thomas Ling left Snape, Suffolk, UK sometime in the 1900's to go to Australia.  By 1914 he's on the electoral register as a farm labourer in a small town called Tallangatta Victoria, Australia; he joined the Australian Army in 1914 in Sydney and his mother (back in the UK) was listed as his next of kin.  By 1919 he is back in Tallangatta Victoria, Australia.   By 1930 he is now at a town called Meigunyah, Walbundrie in NSW about 90 miles NE of Tallangatta and he is also married by now to an Alice Miriam he's now down as a Farmer.  They are both still there in 1936.

I think I have found their marriage in 1920 in Sydney; her maiden name is also listed as Ling ? this could possibly be a transcription error.  He also joined the military during the Second World War joining up at a place called Royal Park Victoria.   I'm pretty sure I have sound the record of his death in Sydney in 1971 if I read the reference correctly .  I can't seem to see Alice's death.  Apparently they had three daughters  one of whom was called Nancy.

Family legend says that one of his daughters married a David or Donald Mccallum who was the brother of John Mccallum the famous Australian actor; going through the marriage indexes I have found a marriage between Donald Bruce Mccallum and a Nancy Elizabeth Ling in 1949 in Sydney which seems to tick the boxes................

Can anyone suggest how I can do some further research and perhaps find some living relatives......

Death mentioned

1349/1971
LING Ivor Thomas
Father William  Mother Deborah
District Sydney

A death certificate would give you more information
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/certificateDatesAndContent.htm

It is a cheaper and quicker option to purchase a transcription of a certificate from an authorised transcription agent - usually costs about AUD $17.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToSearch.htm#TranscriptionAgent

You will need all the death details above.  The transcription can be emailed to you.

Thanks so much Cando - I have had a read of the thread about living people and I think what I've asked and posted is OK but please if its not can you or one of the mods let me know and I will edit my post.

I found the same listings you pointed out to me after I had posted - we must have been searching at the same time......I have asked for a copy of all three listings - hopefully I will get details of the children, grand children and so on and maybe even some addresses.

I have also sent for his WW2 records - digital copies; maybe there will be some clues there also.  The amusing thing is is that by his enlistment in 1939 he's knocked 11 years off his date of birth !

Hopefully the info I've requested above will help....one of the reasons that pushed me into this search is that when I was searching on ancestry there was someone else with Ivor Thomas Ling and Alice Miriam on their tree but that was all the info there was there - I have sent a message to them but it was longer than six months since they had logged on so I suspect they are not around......I am optimistically hoping that I may find someone else researching this family

Hi Nesta

They all seem to be deceased ;)

Oh these blokes and their ages ;D  However it appears he was in the Volunteer Defence Corps, but 11 years ::) :P  However his summary below indicates he enlisted in 1942 not 1939.

http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/

LING, Ivor Thomas
Australian Army    Service#V373736
Date of Birth    4 May 1893 Suffolk England
Date of Enlistment and locality 5 Feb 1942 Walbrundrie, NSW
Place of Enlistment    Royal Park, Victoria
NOK  LING, Alice
Date of Discharge - 1 Jun 1944 with Rank Sergeant
Posting at Discharge - Volunteer Defence Corps

I hope the newspaper snippets are helpful.

Cheers and good luck

Thanks again for the information - whilst browsing looking for Thomas I have found my grandad's embarkation record for the WW1.  He was a sailor working on ships sailing the coastal waters of Australia when war broke out in 1914 and so joined the Australian Army (already have his service records) we knew he was in Melbourne but not where now we have an address of 3 Victoria Grove.  He returned to the UK in 1921 and married my gran in his hometown and there they stayed !

Hi,
I have sent a PM with contact details of the local newspaper which services the region around Walbundrie and Tallangatta.  A letter to the editor with similar information to that given in this topic might be useful in obtainig informaation on living relatives.

regards

Crew on coastal shipping are named amongst the Unassisted Passengers arriving NSW on passenger lists on Ancestry.  I have found over 30 arrivals with my grandfather named.  He was an engineer on coastal runs between 1900 and 1910.

Would you like to find the names of the ships on which your grandfather worked?
