Trying to find surname for my Ann
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 21:48 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Could any one help me find out the surname of my ancestor, she married Isaac Dix, I believe in West Harptree about 1815. All the couple's children were born there, but their christening records do not give her surname. I have tried searching Parish Records on line but have not been able to find a marriage. Unfortunately Ann died in 1850 so no info on where she was from could be gleaned from the 1851 Census!
Grateful for any help
many thanks
Angela

Hi Angela

If you have access to Ancestry there is a public member tree containing Isaac Dix of Somerset, 5 June 1791 - 12 April 1874, son of Joseph & Mary, husband of Ann Musgrove.  Could this be your family?

Sorry, Angela!  I just looked at the family tree properly and the Ann who is the mother of Isaac's children is not Ann Musgrove - she was his second wife.  Doh!

Hi Gill
Yes that's my family line, Isaac married another Ann after he lost the first 1 & that's Ann Musgrove! It would be so nice to be able to give his first Ann a surname rather than a ? I don't know whether the marriage records for West Harptree for that period were lost or damaged, I've got a horrible feeling they were!
Thanks for your replies
Best wishes
Angela

Hi Angela

You may already know this -

1841 census - Harptree Hill, West Harptree

Isaac Dix  45  Agricultural labourer
Ann   55
Francis  18  Agricultural labourer
Mark  15  Agricultural labourer
Ann 14

all born in Somerset.  So at least that narrows it down to one county  :D

You do know that ages of people over 21 were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years?

Hope you find her

SKEATS - Surrey
BRETT - Kent & County Durham
and

Not necessarily!  Somerset, Dorset & Devon were linked in Civil Registration Districts, Sub-districts and Poor Law Unions, and I have early birth certificates of children born Devon - as far west as Exeter - recorded born in County in 1841 at Ilminster, Somerset.

I also experienced problems with Yarcombe, Devon - which is in Chard Registration District and Chard Poor Law Union - as findmypast.com insist on indexing the birthplace under Somerset and their index for 1871 is only searchable by county.  A further anomaly is that Marriage Registers for Yarcombe Parish Church come under Honiton Registration District.

I note from the 'Summary of Holdings' on the SRO website that West Harptree, Widcombe, Marriage Registers are held 1661-1976, but there is no indication of breaks within the time frame.  See http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/asp/parish.asp?Parish=West+Harptree
