With regard to the emigration to Australia, I did have a look on Ancestry but nothing was showing for this Joseph in terms of passenger lists.

There might be some information at the Aussie end of his trip.  I'm not really sure how comprehensive the passenger lists on Ancestry are.

Sorry I do not think this is your Joseph. I did find him in my travels when working on your Australia Thread re the family. I was not aware of this thread and I initially liked him but alas he is in UK in 1861

Just reading this thread and see he is not with his family in 1851. The nearest I can spot is a 26 year old ag lab Joseph HUMPHREY pob Risby Sussex. He is lodging at a hotel in Plumstead Kent HO107/1590 Folio 305 Page 31.

I am not familiar with Sussex but I find no such place in Sussex.

No such place as Risby in Sussex, bets its the accent and should be Rusper. 

I did have a look on the passport applications on findmypast 1851 to 1854 but nothing for our man, but if he is still in Sussex that would explain that.

I don't think passports were required to travel to Australia as it was part of the Commonwealth.
