Genuki has this:
"NEWDIGATE, a parish in the second division of Copthorne hundred, county Surrey, 5,q, miles S. by E. of Dorking, its post town."

So I wonder if this may be a possibility?:

Joseph Humphery b 2 Jun 1798, chr 16 Dec 1798
West Street Independent, Dorking, Surrey
father Joseph Humphery
mother Sarah

I couldn't find a marriage for Thomas and Mary in Ashurst and I'm having trouble remembering whereabouts in West Sussex it actually is.

Every marriage in the 1790s of a Thomas of course was to a Mary!

This could be a possible

Thomas Pierce and Mary Ede botp at Cowfold on 30 April 1790.

Other possibility now that I have found Ashurst is not where I thought it was (ashurstwood!)  ::)

Thomas Pierce to Mary Churcher on 23 June 1794 at Washington

Both marriages from SMI

I checked to see when thomas and Mary started having children in Ashurst

Ashurst baptised to Thomas and Mary Pearce
Thomas 19 July 1795
Phillip 28 May 1799
Joseph 7 March 1803
Elizabeth 9 December 1804
Harriott 11 October 1807

If they didn't have any children earlier than that, ie in Cowfold I would take the Washington marriage as probable

No that's fine Kerry - butt away!  ;D I know very little about Sussex/Surrey and have just been trying to find the most likely ones on the IGI and checking locations on google maps and checking for approx ages and birth places on the censuses.  ;)

This is fun

Think I've proved it was the Cowfold marriage.  There certainly are other Pearces there at the time.

Children baptised at Cowfold to Thomas and Mary Pearce
Mary Pierce 10 November 1790
Sarah 5 February 1792
Edward 6 January 1793 and in the notes box - Pauper

Oh yes, that is looking very promising Kerry.  ;D

Tracey, just a quick question going back to your original query .... if you have Joseph's Australian d/c does it tell you how long he'd been in Australia? Do you know what State he went to? Do you have Joseph on the 1851 census? [It's OK, I found him as a lodger in Plumstead in 1851]

You might get a better response about the immigration if you post specifically about his immigration on the Australian board. You can always post a link to this thread for anyone who is interested and to prevent possible duplication.  :)

So he came to Australia after census night 31 March 1851 and before whatever the date of his marriage was in 1854.  ;)
