Wilding family, Monmouth. - COMPLETED.
« on: Monday 27 July 09 18:59 BST (UK) »
Is anyone familiar with the family of George and Esther Wilding who were living at Kent Cottage, Buckholt Road, Monmouth on the 1911 Census??  Esther Wilding formerly Prosser was the elder Sister of my Grandfather Edwin Prosser. The family lived in Skenfriith until about the middle of the 1880's.  Thank you.

The Wilding family are still in Monmouth, one family ran a gents barbers shop for years in Monnow Street.  The father and later the son were nicknamed "Larrup Wilding"  larrup seems to have been a term used for someone who never stops talking "He can't half larrup"
I can't place Kent Cottage, it must have been renamed, it's a pity you can't see the address on either side like in 1901 because I could pick the exact cottage out for you.  Of course the council would have details.  fred

fred,
Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me the name of the local paper?
Perhaps a letter to the editor would get some response.

Yes the "Monmouthshire Beacon"  I grew up in Monmouth, so I knew them, Prossers too, Mainwarings.  Roger Wilding died about 2 years ago, he was in his 60's, Fenny is younger than me, but there are several families.

There is a Prosser living just below The Buckholt at Mansons Cross.   cheers Fred

Fred,
Thanks for the information.  At the time of the 1911 Census I think
there were nine Wilding children from the marriage of George Wilding and Esther Prosser.  There were six girls and three boys.  I am getting a bit long in the tooth myself, turmed 80 this year and I am trying to tie up some loose ends on my tree before handing over to one of my Daughters who is quite interested.  I will try a letter to the
"Beacon" and see if anyone is interested.  My husband and I visited Monmouth some years back when visiting Wales (I was born in Barry, Glam.), but at that time we did not have a lot of information at hand.  I appreciate your time and effort. By the way I found one of the Mainwarings living around Newport some years back.

I'll try and sort out what happened to your family who stayed here, those sons and daughters will have grown up knowing my dads family.  Mike Wilding, Glyn Mainwaring, Dennis Prosser, Mike Gladden, these are all people I know, I'm sure they'll be interested to know about you even if there is no family connection.  I'm getting over having my gallbladder removed so this will keep me busy.  How do I give you my e-mail address?  Fred

I imagine you have done all the back tracking, found a few things you might not have
John Prosser married Ann Lloyd 16 Mar 1820 Llantillio
baptisms
Thomas 31st Dec 1820
John 24 Aug 1824
Ann 31 Jul 1827
David 12 Oct 1829

John married Mary Mason?  1855

Hestor (Esther) Prosser baptised Skenfrith 4th Jan 1857
daughter of John Prosser wood turner

found a marriage St mary's Monmouth
24 Dec 1891
Edwin Prosser age 18, annealer, Abertillery, father John Prosser, wood turner
married Charlotte Watkins age 19, father Thomas Watkins.
witnesses - Daniel Mainwaring and Louisa Annie Prosser.

also 1892
Annie Maria Prosser age 24, father Charles Prosser, Grocer 22 Church St, Monmouth
married Walter Breakwell age 23, butcher, father James Breakwell, of 22 Church St, Monmouth.

Moving forward isn't so easy
young George Douglas Wilding may have died 1919 age 28, Abergavenny.   And there is a marriage Alice B Wilding also 1919 in Cardiff (Clarence Sanger?)

I'll let you know what I find out from the Monmouth Wildings etc.  Fred
