Surfleet Parish Registers
« on: Saturday 25 July 09 18:31 BST (UK) »
My copy of the Philimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers (3rd edition) shows that the Deposited Original Registers for Surfleet begin in 1662, whilst the IGI is shown to begin in 1561, and the copy of the Registers at the Society of Genealogists begin in 1562. Is the 1662 date an error?

No .... Phillmore's Lincs Vol 3 says
"NOTE,—The registers from 1562 to 1662 are missing, and no trace of
them can be found. The entries for the years 1562 to 1639 have
been supplied from the Bishop's Transcripts."

Roger - if there's something you need from Surfleet, just ask.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

The original register 1562-1662 is missing, so the deposited original registers begin 1662.
The years 1562-1639 are from Bishops transcripts.
In those early years, the new year began on a different date from 1 january , I think it was March time, so the year quoted overlaps our current year span by several weeks.

ps - Geoff -- great minds think alike and at similar times !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Geoff, My great grandmother was Letitia Stanton b1822 Heckington, who married Thomas Burton b1815 Pinchbeck Lincs. I am researching the Burton line, and see that the name is extremely common in the area of Pinchbeck, Surfleet, Deeping, and across into Cambs.(Wisbech) and former Hunts.(Stanground) where I have proven ancestors. The Burton family seem to have been the local gentry, and I would like to prove my ancestry back if possible into this line. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Will proceed by pm as appropriate.

Hi All,
not sure if there is anything you can help with, though you seem to be far more professional than myself.
I have traced my Greetham/Burgess relatives back to the 18 somethings and 17 somethings, and there seems to be quite a strong link with Surfleet, several of them having lived in Surfleet at different times.
If you come across any information around these names on your travels, I would appreciate your help.
I am hoping to get across to Surfleet at some point (and associated areas such as Gedney/Leverington/Boston) etc and visit the local churches.
I know that the work house at Spalding was once the residence of my great X's Grandmother, long since demolished.
Thank you once again
Debulah
