Sinton Gardens, Ashkirk

My great grandfather (born 1840) grew up in Ashkirk and married there.  He and his family remained in Ashkirk until his mother died in 1880 then promptly emigrated to Canada.

Many of our family were born or married at Sinton Gardens in Ashkirk, where he was employed as the Gardener.  Can anyone tell me about this Sinton Gardens or Sinton Estate?  I know nothing of it.

Hi there, I was brought up in Ashkirk, and married in the church there 2 years ago, its a truely enchanting little village all year round.

Sinton Gardens you talk of, It is actually spelt SYNTON, and to my knowledge there are no longer gardens there, just farms and holiday cottages.

Sorry the site will not save the zoom copy I hoped to save for you.   However just choose Selkirk from the drop down box then Ashkirk from the next and type in Synton and a choice will appear.   I just clicked on the first one.   Then zoom in on Synton and you will see area and the names of everywhere as it was in the 1800's.

Here is a link to Sinton Garden Cottage in the 1861 Census (I presume this will be the right house).

You can search this census site by address, as you can see there are many cottages on the Sinton estate in the 1841-1861 censuses. As well as a full census transcription there are also links to both modern maps and historical maps. The pointer on the modern Google map points to the exact house so you can see where the house is now and the information to locate it on other maps.

Anyway I hope this helps your research.

First I want to thank all 3 of you for your kind responses.  I've been trying to take a rest from my family research but just can't stay away...thus my  not very timely response to you.  I map and census links are wonderful. Thanks.

As for 'haunted house' I wonder if you remember a house up in the Synton  area that has high stone walls all around it's back yard.  When we visted many years ago a local farmer told us that would have been where the Synton gardener lived. Do you remember the house I speak of? If so do you know this house by another name or purpose or who lives there today?

I'm looking for a Margaret Murray Scott - who may have been the Margaret Scott born to John Scott and Margaret Kennedy in 1851 at Synton Gardens.  Would we be interested in the same person by any chance?

Hello Alli,
I have many Scotts in that area and timeframe.  One John and Margaret Scott I have had a daughter named Georgina born about 1858 but I don't see a Margaret born in 1851.  This John was the son of George Scott and Jean Stewart I believe.  I have more about that family and others.

John Scott and Margaret Kennedy were married 15 Feb 1847 in Hawick Roxburghshire and had the following children:-
