Francis Wynne and Margaret Rowlands
« on: Thursday 23 July 09 13:59 BST (UK) »
My partner's grandmother was Margaret Ann Rowlands born in 1898 at Llanidan, Anglesey. Her parents were Owen Rowlands and Ann (nee Owen). Margaret married Francis Wynne in 1917 somewhere in Carnarvonshire. They had four children in Carnarvonshire and then moved to Liverpool in late 1925 and had six or seven more children there. Margaret died in childbirth in 1937 aged 39 in Liverpool.

I have found details of Margaret's ancestry on Anglesey going back a few generations, but I know nothing about Francis. I sent off for their marriage certificate a while ago, but am still waiting.

On freebmd, the only possibilities for Francis's birth seem to be:

  • Francis Wynne, 1884 in Wrexham
  • Frank Wynne, 1890 in Chester (in 1911, he was living with his family at 18 Chapel Lane, Christelton Road Chester, Cheshire - father was a labourer)
  • Frank Winn, 1892 in W. Derby
  • Francis Winn, 1894 in Liverpool
  • Frank Gwenlyn Wynne, 1894 in St Asaph (in 1911, he was living with his family at Malvern Villas, Northop Hall, Flintshire - father was a teacher)
In adult life, Francis (Frank) was a stone mason.

The 1911 census has information on a Francis David Wynne (b.1905 Camarvonshire) which cross-references with this birth:

Births Mar 1905
Wynne  Francis David
Bangor  11b 435

Further investigation reveals his parents as:

Francis William Wynne (b.1873 Staffs) & Catherine (b.1881 Carnarvon)

The marriage cert for Margaret and Francis will hopefully confirm his parent's details

 :)

This Francis David Wynne born in 1905 would have been too young to have married Margaret Ann Rowlands in 1917.

Margaret Ann Rowlands and Francis Wynne were my Great Grandparents.  I've recently started tracing the family tree and like you, found plenty of stuff on Margaret's side and struggled with Francis. It's only been the past couple of weeks that things have fallen into place.

We always believed that Francis was Scottish (My Grandmother, Elizabeth was their daughter. My Mum is her daughter, Lynne). It turns out that his family were indeed from Edinburgh (decendant from Irish immigrants in the 1840s) but Francis and his brothers were actually born in Whitehaven, Cumbria. His birth date is 2/5/1890. His father was called Benjamin Wynne and his mother was Mary Donnelly. By the 1901 census when Frank was 11 the family were back living in Edinburgh. His siblings included Norman, William, Christina Elizabeth who along with Mary all shared the names of some of his children.

In 1911, Francis emigrated to Canada and lived at some point in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1915 he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. I've just ordered his service file so until it arrives I don't know anything about his role in WW1, but I have discovered that the CEF had training camps in North Wales, and I suspect that is how he met Margaret.

If you get in touch with me on here I'll forward you details for all the records I've got so far.

Cheers,
Liz
