WW1 RAF Medal...

Hi
I've recently been given my step-great grandfather's WW1 British War Medal.  It is inscribed:
60749.2.A.M.  A.HOLCOMBE. R.A.F

Could anyone advise me as to how to research this (nothing appears on NA medal rolls) or indeed give me their thoughts on what the inscription might indicate (other than I presume he was an early member of the RFC?)  I know nothing else about him or his service record.

Air Mechanic 2nd Class.

From one source, it appears that he was a civilian joining the RFC in early 1917.

He probably has a Service Record at the NA but you would have to visit  or get a researcher as the RAF records arent online.
