Married John McKerell and had one child Euphemia Neilson McKerell-later adopted by Robert McmurtrieBanks
Margaret married Robert McMurtrie Banks and had five children
Elizabeth Neilson Banks b1894 – married William Ross
Jeanie Neilson Banks b1896
Roberta Neilson Banks b1899 – married John McSwiggan
Robert Neilson Banks b1901
Walter Neilson Banks b1905

I am a direct descendant of Robert Mcmurtrie Banks from his first marriage to Jeanie Florence Martin

Where in Scotland was Margaret Neilson born and who were her parents?

Unfortunately i know almost nothing about Margaret except my ggrandfather had a family with her--i cannot find a marriage cert for Robert M Banks and Margaret but they are recorded as having married on both their death certs--I have recorded all that i know about their children but know nothing about her ancestors---I hope that someone can link the children back to these parents and then hopefully back from there--
Any info will be appreciated

I have info on many Neilsons in the Stirlingshire, W Lothian area but nothing on this lot.  I am wondering what their connection to Stirlingshire is?

Hi Bruce

I have found your family on the 1901 census at Main St Cadder Lanarkshire Margaret Neilson is the housekeeper and was born abt 1859 in Glasgow Lanarkshire, I think maybe to Claud Neilson and Euphemia Bruce, I am basing this on the fact that Margaret called her first daughter Euphemia

Euphemia Neilson or McKerrill was born in Kyle Union Poorhouse and Margaret states on the birth cert that John McKerrill is not the father of the child as he deserted her 5 years earlier

On the birth cert for Roberta Neilson Banks she states the same thing my guess is she cannot marry Robert McMutrie Banks because she is still married to John McKerrill on that cert Robert mcMutrie Banks has signed as father and Margaret Neilson has signed as mother

Hello Pam,
Thanks for your help. Yes that 1901Census info is correct. I have just found Margaret's Death Cert. Her parents were Walter Neilson & Jane Galloway. Do you happen to know the Reference numbers of the certs you found so i can locate them easily??? I have Birth Certs for both sons Walter & Robert. On both boys birth certs it is clearly stated that John McKerell is not the father and she has not had any contact with him for 15/18years. I think that Margaret & Robert may not have formally married although she is recorded on both their Death Certs as his 2nd wife. It appears that John McKerell could not be found for Margaret to divorce him???
I am hoping to find desendants of the sons Robert & Walter who continue the BANKS name---no luck at all yet--
Any other snippets of info or clues will always be appreciated

Margaret's parents were Walter Neilson & Jane Galloway
the link to Stilingshire is that both sons Robert(1901) & Walter(1905) were born there and both parents died there in Slammanan--Robert in 1919 & Margaret in 1922--of note is that Margaret's Death Cert is in the name of Banks although i have not established an actual marriage yet-

Are there any desendants with the BANKS name out there from Robert Mc Murtrie Banks???
i am only aware of FIVE living BANKS males in Robert McMurtries bloodline

any help will be so appreciated

I am descended from Margaret Neilson's Brother (Archibald Neilson) and have been doing lots of research into the Neilson family in Scotland.  If you wish any info about this side of the family just let me know.
