Hello,  ;D
I am related to the Craigs of Holms Farm, and the subsequent Craigs from Strathaven. I am descended from the John Craig who is buried in the old part of the cemetery in Strathaven. My uncle and I would welcome any info about the Craigs and the farm, and are than willing to share any info that we have. I have found mention of wills that are kept in the Scottish archives relating to Craigs from Avondale in the  1600s, though as of yet have not been able to view them (due to distance and time).
 :) :)

Hi McVicars,

With regards Robert Craig 1804-1857 do you have any further details on his death ie date/location as i'm trying to see if he is the same Robert who is the father of Margaret Lennox Craig?

I have an 1841 census for South Halls Farm,

Elizabeth Craig 35 Farmer (Possibly Elizabeth Begg born outside Scotland)
Margaret Craig 12
Mary Craig 10
Jean Craig 7
Elizabeth Craig 6
Helen Craig 5
Jessie Craig 3
John Craig 1

Also you mentioned Dykenook in an earlier post - I also have a connection to Dykenook - through William Struthers of Dykenook who is the last entry on the 1841 census page that also lists Elizabeth Craig. What is your Dykenook link?

Regards Rob
ADD---- Just found Elizabeth Begg's birth showing parents Hugh Begg and Margaret Lennox in Muirkirk and also the marriage of Robert Craig and Elizabeth Begg in both parishes of Muirkirk and Avondale....also the children's names are following the naming pattern so Margaret Lennox Craig is definitely the daughter of Robert Craig, son of John Craig of Holms.

My research shows William Meikle b.9/12/1733 and d.1792. His children were John b.1/11/1766, Robert (12/12/1768), Agnes (12/12/1768), and another Agnes (24/12/1775).

Hi Ken

Do you have any more information on John Meikle b.1/11/1766, son of William Meikle and Agnes Craig? Looking to find any marriage details for him to try and sort out some loose ends in my OH's tree.

Regards

Tracey

Interesting thread!

My ancestors, Leipers, farmed just south and west of Holms at Stoneyhill from around 1740 then Drumboy till mid 1880s.
William Leiper married Janet Meikle in 1747 and Leipers married various Lindsays, Hamiltons, Donaldsons and Mortons but never a Craig. I wonder if they were a different religion? The Leiper graves I have found are in Newmilns churchyard.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone with any knowledge of Leipers in the 1700s or earlier in the area and relations of Janet Meikle (b Avondale 1721).

Regards
John

I am new to Roots - and am also very interested in Holms, Glengavel Farm. The 1841 census and Craigs referred to - included Ann (Hamilton)Wingfield, my family ancestor who was born Strathaven 1795, emigrated to Canada.  I feel sure she is related to Mary Craig, not sure just how, but Mary's maiden name was Hamilton, right?
The website I'd like to pass on is Geograph UK for terrific maps; you can see Holms below Drumclog, the Glengavel Water & Reservoir, with photos. The photographer is Gordon Brown, with a link to him - I've 'talked to him' - very helpful. Good luck.

I came across another source for Strathaven cemetery that does not seem to have been mentioned yet. It is an on-line monuments transcription by Anne Barrie, which is well indexed and user friendly. The path to follow is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barrie/
also there is a "click here" for queries. I did that and got her e-mail address, sent her one, but have not heard back. Perhaps it is outdated.
In this document are all (or most) of the names mentioned in this series of letters, including Leiper and Meikle. Very helpful for those of us unable to view the site in person, Gail in Canada

Time for me to post my family surnames of interest in Lanarkshire: Brown/e: (Barony) Glasgow 1800-1850
Hay and Fyfe: (Barony) Glasgow 1750 ff
Wingfield: (Barony) Glasgow 1800 - 1850
Wingfield and Hamilton: Parishes of Avondale, Blantyre, Hamilton 1700 ff

I've viewed the 1841 census; John Wingfield and children were in Glasgow; his wife Annie (Hamilton) Wingfield was at home of John and Mary (Hamilton) Craig in Holms, Avondale, the same Parish where Annie was married in 1820 at Strathaven. Annie and Mary may have been sisters, but more likely niece and aunt.
Any suggestions welcome, Gail Browne

If Talljohn would care to contact me I have quite a lot of information on many of the families which interest him.  My knowledge of the Leipers is quite good but only backl to about 1780.
