Where is Holms (Holmes) Farm, parish of Avondale?
« on: Monday 20 July 09 12:34 BST (UK) »
I have several Craig ancestors who are listed in 1841 census as living at Holms - John Craig (Farmer) age 65, wife Mary and sons James, 30yrs (my gt gt grandfather) and his brother John, 25yrs. Later records show James was at Holms when he died in 1851. That John, his brother was a farmer there in 1881 census and after that John's son, William J Craig married to Elisabeth Steel both died there too in 1914 and 1925.
Would like to know where this is?
Other places listed on the same census page in 1841 are Peelhill (James Morrison), Brownhill (John Lawson) and Overhouse (andrew Wilson) - if that helps to identify the location.
thankyou if you can help

In addition if anyone can point me to the graves of these Craigs; would appreciate as wil be visiting soon - esp James ((1809-1851) and John (approx born 1776)

Wow - that was quick thankyou so much. Further research shows family dating back tot he early 1700's have lived and died there. Forgive my ignorance,  but when you say Enumeration District 3 - is it possible to get an exact address - ie a location that could be visited?

I did a google search for Barnock School which gives a location between Dungavel and Drumclog near Strathaven. There is a good chance that the farm may still exist. I'll check an os map tomorrow.

Interestingly there is a Craig registered on Friends Reunited for Barnock School for 1984. Maybe a relative

I just checked www.streetmap.co.uk and entered Drumclog. The page opens up and you can see Holms just to the south of Drumclog and if you pan south slightly you can see Peelhill and Overhouse

You are absolutely brilliant!!!  My great great granda is also listed as living at Dykenook which is also on this map. Thankyou ever so much.
If I may pose another question - given so many of my relatives lived, worked and died in this area would there be a local cemetery where it is likely they would all be buried?
best wishes M

Possibly Strathaven cemetery that dates back to the 1600s but it it also close to the Ayrshire border and they may have used Newmilns/Darvel

Such is technology that you can then go to Google maps, now that you know where it is, get Drumclog in Satellite view, and get a good picture of the place try this link, it may not work after a time
Grant in Tipperary
Piper in Tipperary
Blong in Leix
Watson in Offaly
Pugh in North Wales
Evans in North Wales
