Lived in or know anything about Hulme?
« on: Monday 20 July 09 08:26 BST (UK) »
I am seeking stories about places and people in Hulme.  I am a resident of Hulme and realize I know very little about the history of the area.  There is plenty on the internet that is dry and historical but I would like stories about actual people and places.  I have just started a community forum called BEST IN HULME http://knowingabout.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl

It is aimed at those of us who live work or study in Hulme so we can find out whats going on.  I live in Hulme and didn't I was missing many events like the Manchester Festival till it started and missed out on good stuff happening at the Zion and local garden center.

I wish keep my forum updated with any future events so local people can attend

I also think it is important for people to know about the past.  I would love to hear from people who lived in the area some time ago.  What was it like? Were people really more friendly?

I'd love to here from anyone with thoughts on the subject of Hulme
Searching for humanity in Hulme

Hi, My name is John and I was born in hulme in 1958. My family were born and bred there and were relocated to the new Wythenshawe estate in the early sixties relocation and clearance programme. Thousands of people were moved many against their will. It was a mass exodus and splitting of a close knit community of large extended families many living in the same streets. My brother wrote many books on the people and places of that period. His name is Neil Scott and the main book published was called "The People of Hulme"

Please find attached a link to a few maps of the area in the 1950s

Hi

Just found these wonderful links on youtube.  Two slideshows showing nearly 20 minutes of old photographs of Hulme. Absolutely wonderful to watch and heartbreaking to know most of it is gone.
