marriage look-up st margarets
« on: Sunday 19 July 09 18:57 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help? I have a copy of an ancestor's birth certifate in 1839, but the hand writing is not very good and I am unable to read her mother's maiden name, so wonder if anyone as a index of the parish of st Margaret's PR.

In all the census, they live in this parish, but also have bapts in St George. I am looking for a marriage for JOHN LEWITT and ANN **ANN, about 1820's.

If anyone could help.

Many thanks

Greeting’s & Welcome……

Sorry but the only John LEWITT marriage c 1820
Is thus :~

St: MARY’s Parish Church. Leicester.
John Lewitt ~ Jane GREY. by Banns.

Closest to 1820 St:~ Margaret’s :~

1813. John Lewitt ~ Bridget Swann. 19th. July. By Banns.

1815. John Lewitt ~ Mary Allen. 20th. September. By Banns

I can not see any Lewitt Baptisms at St: Margaret’s 1813 ~ 78

Can you scan that part of the Birth certificate and post it on this thread  so we can have a go ?

Sorry.

Hello Mike
Sorry I am unable to send you a image, but my scanner packed in a while back, and have not got round to replacing it.

My first throught  was it could be SWANN, but by going by the ages on the census, Ann was born around 1800, Ireland, so too early. Bridget is a Irish name, maybe she liked to be called Ann, but as I sid too early.

Most of the children were bapt at St Georges, according to the IGI on familysearch, will maybe have to send for a copy of one of my ancestor's Susanna Lewitt siblings.

Many thanks for looking for me.

Greeting’s Again. ….

Having looked at the 1851 Census returns :~ HO107/ 2088 / 289 / 13.
we see that the eldest Child
Sarah  was born in Ireland. b.c 1827.
There fore could the Marriage have taken place in Ireland ?

Hello again

Yes, your right, but I was hoping with fingers crossed, that they where'nt married in Ireland. Another idea, was that the first child may not belong to John, because of the big gap between the next child.

Thanks

Hello

Forgot to add Sarah ( born in ireland) not on the 1841 census, I've looked for her, but have been unable to find her, throught she may have been with a relative, which could give me another clue.

Hello Mike

I think you may have cracked it. On the 1861 census, the family are living at 44 Baker st, Ann is a widower, and on the 1881 census, her daughter is living at 44 Baker st with her husband and family, with other relatives. From the 1851 census, they have lived at Baker st.

If she lied about her age on all the census, she would have been old enough to be the Bridget Swann who married John in 1813.

I will send for the death certificate to see if it gives her maiden name, but I have never come across this before, usually give the husbands name, and the informant. Will try that first before sending for any family members birth certificates.

Thanks again.

Hello again

I've had another look at the birth certifcate, its looks like the first letter is a "S", and ends in "ann", so Mike I think it is  Bridget Swann.

Put Bridget Lewitt into all census on ancestry, and not one came up, so looks like she used the name Ann.

Wonder if I could be cheeky, and ask if you could find John Lewitt's burial. I know he died between 1851 and 1861, and was living in Baker Street, but there are two deaths on freebmd between that time, and no ages are given.

Many thanks.
