Thanks for all the replies - it's still as clear as mud!

I think my best bet would be to not send family photographs to anyone who is not "immediate" family and then request that they not be posted on any website unless they say that my husband  gave them permission to use our family snaps, which is what most of these photographs are.

It has got nothing to do with copyright.  Ancestry has strict rules on the use of photographs - you must get the owner's permission before using them.  If you contact Ancestry and complain, they will force the miscreants to remove the photos from their pages.
 

"Be aware that content, including photographs, even if submitted to a site of which you are a member, belongs to the creator or submitter and you should not reproduce it without permission of the owner and that photographs of living individuals must not be posted without their consent."
