Hello Lee

This is a long shot, but I saw your post about James Payne of Reading, and your description of his career with Berks Regiment fits what I know of my great-grandfather, also James Payne. Any chance it's the same man? My great-grandfather married Gertrude Southgate-Sands, and my grandmother was, I think, their 6th child.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Naomi

Hi Silva

There could be a family connection as my grandfather had an elder brother and three sisters (as well as a younger brother who was killed in WW1). Don't know what happened to brother William but all his sisters married (1 x White & 2 x Pratt).  My father was vague about his cousins but I know that there were several girls a lot younger than him.  No connections to Lay, Jones or North that I know of!

Grandfather & great grandfather were both born in Rickmansworth.  They moved to Speen some time between 1875 - 1881.

Hope this is enough to see if there is a connection.  Have my Payne family back several generations now, but more recent events are more difficult to confirm.

Good luck
Cicely

Now that is interesting too because I remember my mum saying that the Lay's had family or some kind of connection to Rickmansworth.

Hello again

Since I last posted I have asked my Dad whether there was any chance his grandfather (James Payne) was ever a landlord, and he immediately said, 'Oh yes! The White Hart in Reading!' So there you have it - I suspect, Lee, you are my first cousin, once removed. Would love to hear from you!

Hi Silva

If you can give me details of one of your Payne ancestors might be able to link you to our family.  :)
Not being greedy, but 2 new cousins would be great.  ;D

Just back from hols, so a lovely surprise.

Regards

Hi Lee,

I know this is an old posting (I came across it on google), and I'm new to genealogy, but I believe James Payne at the White Hart is my great, great grandfather (I'm descended from his son Percy).

Would be fabulous to find out more about James and any other Payne ancestors as I hit a wall with the Payne's (my father didn't have a lot of family knowledge) and so I turned my attention to other family branches. I felt a bit of a failure as my surname is Payne!

I look forward from you.
Kind regards
Johanna

Hi Johanna

Welcome to Rootschat!  That's the way I found this site.  :)
Well there are are a lot of Paynes about.  Was your Percy born 1899?  Don't know much about mine as he died young, 10 years before I was born.  Have only recently been shown a photo of him, by a cousin.
James Payne was my 'brick wall' but have now gone back another 3 generations on all families!

If you are an unknown relative, will send you the recent ( and more difficult to trace) family members by pm, when you have the required 3 posts.

Regards
