Llanelian cemetary
« on: Friday 17 July 09 18:21 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where the records of the deceased (buried) in this graveyard are kept?

Members of my family (on my fathers Welsh) side are buried in a grave there.  I have visited and tidied up the grave and laid welsh slate etc, but the little chapel in the cemetary has fallen into disrepair and looks like it has been taken over by vandals judging by the amount of smashed beer bottles in it.  There is no roof nor doors so its open territory i am afraid.  I dont even know what this little chapel is called  or the history of it , year constructed etc- anyone?

Thanks for any information in advance.

From Genuki (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/DEN/Llanelian/index.html) it looks like they should be at the Denbighshire Archives in Ruthin (http://www.denbighshire.gov.uk/en-gb/DNAP-6ZQKTQ). There also might be copies at the Conwy Archives in Llandudno (http://www.conwy.gov.uk/section.asp?cat=772&Language=1).

Hi From your description you are talking about Llanelian on Anglesey not the one in Old Colwyn - alongside the White Lion Pub as the first reply gave you. If you contact the Gwynnedd FHS or as the directory calls it Caernarvonshire FHS they should be able to help as it comes under Amwlch area. If you join them they have several publications of headstone details also Amwlch have a good records site

Just a further note of something i have just come across on this site under Denbighshire heading (as the boundaries moved Llanelian-Old Colwyn came under both Denbighshire and Caernarvonshire at different times) There is a link for *Monumental Inscriptions* for Clwyd which covers both churches in Llanelian (Old Colwyn)

I have checked a little more for you, the chapel does not show on a 1879 map but shows on a 1900 map (no name) as Chapel/Morgue/Cemetery in Ddol Ddu area, one of the modern roads nearby is also called Ddol Ddu which is what they did in that area when they built on land where a farm etc used to be. The link i told you about does not cover this one, the two for Llanelian i think cover for the one on the hill to the village (half way up on the right) and the one in the village itself
