1851 Name index look-up: Manchester
« on: Sunday 27 February 05 13:07 GMT (UK) »
If there's a surname index for Manchester 1851, could some kind soul in possession of one please look up the name SHONE. I know the family I am searching for was in Manchester at the time but I've no idea in which area. I have the census on CDs & have had a good trawl through but haven't come across the right people yet (Charles & Jane Shone, born in Malpas & Penkhull, Staffs respectively.) I'd just like a little help with where to direct my search more specifically.
Thanks,
cicely

Slater's Directory of Manchester & Salford for 1850 lists 2 possibles:

Charles Shone, striker, 51 Sherwood Buildings, Hulme

Charles Shone, bricklayer, Bebbington St, Chorlton-on-Medlock

Hope this helps!

Thank-you, Manchester Rambler!
The 2nd Charles Shone - the bricklayer - is mine. I tried to look the street up in 1851 but most of that area's census returns are badly damaged & illegible. Which makes your information even more helpful.
Thanks again,
