BOHER Limerick Ireland
« on: Friday 17 July 09 01:52 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone have any information about Boher Limerick? One of my ancestors Michael REGAN listed this as his birth place on his shipping record. I would love to know more about this town/village?

Thanks

Boher is about 6 miles outside Limerick City on the N24 Limerick to Waterford Road. Its a very small village consisting mainly of 2 pubs on the main road and is set in a farming area. Otherwise there's not much to tell about the place.

The name derives from 'Bóthar' which is the Irish for 'Road'

Caherconlish and Murroe would be the closest villages of any size.

Good luck with your search.

Dara.

Thanks for the information about Boher. Where would the locals have gone to register a birth, marraige or death? Is Boher a part of a larger parish?  I am not sure which area/parish/church to start looking for further information about the REGAN family.

from the townland databse at www.thecore.com/seanruad :

 Townland : Boher
 Barony : Clanwilliam
 Civil Parish : Abington
Poor Law Union/ Registration District : Limerick

you you didn't mention which religion the family were ..

if they were RC then you can check the details and available parish record sources on the the Irish Times site for East Limerick here : http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/limerickerc.htm

Boher is in the parish Murroe, Boher & Abington and records are available to view on microfilm P. 2508 in the National Library. Records are included from about 1815 to 1880.

Church of Ireland records for the Civil parish of Abington seem to be in local custody with some copies in the National Archives.

Some parish record transcripts for Co. Limerick are included on the Irish Family History Foundation Website at www.irish-roots.ie. This is  a pay-site and the transcripts cost €5. The website has a list of the Co. Limerick sources they hold at this link : http://www.rootschat.com/links/06qc/

I am actually living in Boher Co. Limerick and Boher is part of the parish of Murroe Boher in the County of Limerick.

There would be still parochial records with both the RC and Church of Ireland churches depending on what faith your ancestor was Sharon.

This is my facebook page on Boher and I can show you more images of Boher if you like Sharon.  It  is a lovely little hamlet about 8 miles outside Limerick city.    Limerick is very famous for its rugby - Thomond Park.

Hope this hekps

Lean

Hi Lean,
Thanks for reading my post and replying. I have been researching Boher and the Regan family for a while and have not been able to find my ancestor yet, but I will keep trying.  I will check out your facebook page for the pictures.
Thanks
