Hi Gemini

Martha shows up on the NZ Marriage Index as "Matty" TIELLE (m. James HAINING 1882) ... but I can't immediately find a marriage in NZ for the son William TIELLE.

As for the unamed child born 1863 I'm also a bit puzzled.
When you see an index listing with "unamed" ... it quite often indicates that a child has died very soon after its birth  ...    but there is nothing in this case, listed in the death index.   ???

EDIT :   Have found the death of the child born 1863 - died in the same year - listed as "unamed MALE"  :

Can you tell me how the surname "TIELLE" is pronounced ?
(There is no "soundex" facility with the NZ online BDM - so we all have to use our imaginations as to miss-spellings.   :D )

Hi again Gemini

Oooh !    ::)

I wondered why, when I looked on the NZ Marriage index and saw two TIELLE marriages, one for Pierre in 1860 and another for "a Peter TIELLE"  in 1866 whether they were in fact the same men (Peter being the anglicised form of Pierre) ??

Indeed they are the same man !!!       And in December 1866, Pierre was charged with bigamy for having married a "Mary Ann BROWN" whilst his first wife (Margaret), was still know to be  alive !!

The article I found wasn't very detailed ... but I'll have another look and will post a reference on here for you.

Hi

These are the links to articles re: Pierre / Peter TIELLE :

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/

North Otago Times - 7 December 1866 - (articled under heading of "The Oamaru Times and WAITAKI REPORTER ... "

and

Otago Witness - 8 December 1866 - "News of the Week"

You'll possibly find other information for your families at the PapersPast website.   William seems to be mentioned.

from census or bdm or family would be great thanks

Unfortunately there are NO census records available for NZ .

Here are the TIELLE deaths (up to 1940) from the BDM online index :

1901 - Pierre - 74 years

1903 - Margaret - 77 years
[Archives New Zealand (Dunedin office) hold a probate record for TIELLE - Margaret - widow - of Orepuki :   See the Archives NZ website for further details if you wish to purchase this ]

1902 - Peirre ?  -  10 months
(Born 1901 - Pierre TIELLE - son of William and Norah)

1918 - William John - age not recorded    (WWI death - refer to later posting)

1929 - Norah - 65 years
                             --------------------------

Here's a link to Southland Cemeteries which you can search yourself (it's a bit slow I'm afraid).    I tried to find TIELLE at the Orepuki cemetery, but there was no one of that name, so you might just have to go through the list till you find them.

Hi again Gemini

You can search the NZ BDM indexes online ... there are quite a few children to William and Norah / Nora TIELLE :

PS :    Some of the HAINING children's births,  have their mother's name spelt as "Martha" and others  "Mattie"  :

Hi

It does look as if the TIELLE name was not carried on the New Zealand, with the loss of both of Norah and William's sons.

William John TIELLE died in WWI :

The Auckland Museum Cenotaph database ("google" for link) also has an entry for William John.

              william married norah?

Hi

There is NO marriage listed on NZ Index for a "William TIELLE"
(I've tried all sorts of variations of the name and also searched using the bride's name).

Have discovered this marriage though (Source:  NZSG Marriages 1836-1956 CD) which I think is very likely to be  "William TIELLE" ?

William TILLIE - Norah CORKERY - 1888

 :D hello lu
Thank you very much for the info you gave me, you have confirmed what I have already found except for the marriage of William and Norah. I have another query this one regarding Theresa Martha Hall who left New Zealand aged 4 years old. We have not been able to find any information on her and was wondering whether she could have been adopted and if there is any connection between the name Martha Trielby Haining (daughter of Mattie and James Haining) and Theresa Martha Hall. Theresa Martha Hall married Francis Robert Fitzgerald in 1919 and they had two sons Francis Robert Fitzgerald 1919 and Ronald Joseph Fitzgerald  1922
