GRO Number missing in St Hilary
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 07:48 BST (UK) »
Hi there all,

I know for a fact my GGGrandmother Harriet Hill Sedgman was born on 4 Jan 1843 in St Hilary Cornwall. But I can't seem to find her GRO number anywhere. Found younger brother and older brother okay. Just hers doesn't appear anywhere. I want to order her birth cert but can't without the cert. Any ideas ?  ???

Von

Hi Von, the name appears on FreeBMD as 'Harriett Hill Sedgmen', but it's there in March Q 1841.

Hmm..  I see that muddies the water a bit.

There's an IGI extracted entry which gives the birthdate you mention - parents Michael and Mary.

In 1841 Michael and Mary Sedgman in St Hilary have a 4 [?] month old daughter named Elizabeth - but there is no Elizabeth Sedgman birth registered last quarter 1840, or in the first two quarters of 1841.
However there is an extracted record for the christening of Elizabeth Jane Sedgman at St Hilary, born 8 February 1841, daughter of Michael and Mary

MMm well that's interesting. Thanks Galium for looking for me.
Harriet does have a sister Elizabeth Jane born on the 8th Feb 1841.
Parents are Michael and Mary (nee Hill).
I am beginning to think this may be some secret in the family.
As the whole of Michael and Mary's family came out to Australia in Aug 1848 but
left Harriet behind with her Aunty Harriet Hill and then young Harriet came over
later. Maybe her Aunty was her mother..... ? They are on the census
together in 1851 in St Martin in Cornwall.
Or maybe she was just sick and couldn't emigrate.....
I always find things that cause more questions !
thanks again
Von

A little way from Penzance I know but there is an Eliza Jane Sedgeman registered in Truro District in Q2 1841.
