« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 15:38 BST (UK) »
Hi there

Looking for information about Charles Edward Hulkes maybe born in Essex.
This daughter was Mary Ann Hulkes (b 1867 in Mansing, Essex) who married my
GG Grandfather George James Anders in 1890.

Looking forward to hearing from anybody

Hi

This is a tricky one, as I can't see a suitable birth or census record for Mary Ann (as Hulkes) before marriage, or any evidence that a Charles Edward Hulkes existed!  It's a very unusual surname. What was his occupation, according to his daughter's marriage certificate? Does it say that he was deceased?

I see that she said in 1891 that her age was 23 and her birthplace was "Mancing", Essex (RG12/653/29/27).  I know of no such place as Mancing.  Do you have her in any later census for confirmation of the birthplace or do you have other sources of information for her birth?

Do you have any other clues to the family such as, for example, census/BMD information and/or names of witnesses from the marriage certificate?

Anna :)

I, too, can't find any evidence for Mary Ann other than the 1891 entry and the marriage.

There is a place called Messing in Essex, although my guess is that the pronunciation of Mountnessing is more likely to be heard as Mancing.

They married in Kent and Hulkes is fairly common in Kent.

(I see you had no luck when you asked this question three and a half years ago; I hope you have better luck this time).

Mary Ann seems to have reverted to an Essex birthplace by 1911, but without viewing the transcript/image I don't know where in Essex she's cited.

There is, of course, a Stambridge in Essex as well.
