1841 Somerset Census Help Please!
« on: Sunday 27 February 05 00:34 GMT (UK) »
Hello, The very kind memmber from the Wales message board checked the 1841 Wales census looking for Henry & Emma Ashford , but they were not living there.I am assuming they were still living in Somerset during 1841. Would anyone have access to the 1841 census that covered Somerset? If anyone comes across Henry & Emma Ashford in the census would you please let me know? I won't be able to search for any type of records until I can confirm they were indeed living there.

Hi,

You certainly have been waiting a long time for this one. Let us know if you still require this information and we will give it another try. No guarantees of course but the entry may now be able to be located.....Kris

Dear Kris, Thank You so much for your reply, and your interest in my post.
I have not been able to find out if Henry & Emma are listed in the 1841 Somerset Census.
I live in the U.S. so I don't have acsess to any of the U.K records.
I would be so grateful if someone in the group would be able to tell me if Henry & Emma are listed in the census.
  With Kind Regards,
Margaret

Hi Blodwyn
Any idea of age for Henry? Would he and Emma have definitely been married in 41? There is a Henry Ashford 20 in Witham Friary living nextdoor to a family of Ashfords who may be parents and siblings, but no Emma. Happy to post details if he seems likely.
Cheers Jan ;)

Dear Jan,Thank you for your reply. Henry Ashford was born Oct. 15,1817. So he would have been 24 years old. I know he worked as a miner when he ived in  Wales, Butwhen he left England to come to AMerica he listed his occupation as Farmer.
I don't know if he and Emma would have been married in 1841. Their oldest child Alfred was born 1846, So perhaps they were not married at the time the census was taken.
Emma's maiden name was Whaler, and she was born 1815, so she would have been  26 in 1841.
Thank You for your help. It is greatly appreciated.
With Regards,
Margaret

Hi Blodwyn
In 1841 ages were rounded down to nearest five or ten below so 20 is 20-24. So this young man could be yours

Friary St, Witham Friary
Henery Ashford 20
lodging with Benjamin Parsons 30 Ag Lab

next door
Oziel Ashford 60 Ag Lab
Sarah do 60
Alfred do 20
Benjamin do 20
Sarah do 12
All born in county
HO107-0942  Folio25/8 Pg8

There isn't another possibility in Somerset for your man
No Emma Whaler or variants in Somerset.
Cheers Jan

Dear Jan,I can't thank you enough for this information!. I do believe there is a connection here with Oziel Ashford, as Henry had a grandson named Ozal. Here in America that is not a common name, we all wondered where it came from, now I think we have the answer!
  Thank you Again,
With Best Regards,
Margaret
