Death at Benwell.....Completed with thanks.
« on: Monday 13 July 09 18:24 BST (UK) »
My 2x great grandfather John Kelly died around 1892 while living in Benwell, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

He was a Catholic and I wonder if anyone could tell me where he would be buried?
Would it be in St. James?
Can anyone actually look up this death for me or am I asking too much?

Thank you very much Diddy.
I am not sure what to think. He has to be there somewhere but I am not sure that Benwell would be called Newcastle Town? You never know though.
Thinking cap is on!
Thanks again Kim

think for purposes of registration it would be - as within city.

what was his date of birth - do you have in in 1891c? or 1881?

Year of birth is 1831 (Ireland) on the 1871 & 1881 census but 1824 on the 1891.

 erin,

Never mind when Benwell became part of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, it was included in the Newcastle Registration District ( as Diddy says), from the start of BMD registration in July 1837.

Benwell was one of the "townships" of the Parish of St John, west side of Newcastle.
The Parish cemetery was/is off Elswick Road.

To stand a good chance of finding where he is buried, his death registration is needed.

The John Kelly death Diddy found was 56 yrs at death.

What info do you have to point to a death around 1892, in Benwell ?

Hi Michael.
Thanks for your reply.
The only information I have for John's death was from a relative who thought he died around then.
I have located him on the 1891 census & his parish is given as St. James not St. John which is what is confusing me.
None of my family were sure where he was buried. My uncle who was the best source of advice for family history was not sure either.

Kim,

Please give the census ref for him on 1891 census. ( I will spare you lecture 27b(ii) on the parishes of Newcastle)

Once you have established when/where he died, the tracing of his grave site should be straightforward.  Tyne & Wear Archives ( Newcastle), Newcastle City Library, and Newcastle Bereavement Services ( Civic Centre) etc, have burial/grave registers.

the Bereavement Services are at www.bereavementservices@nwecastle.gov.uk
