John Paul - Tollkeeper, Broomhouse 1810

Hello

John Paul b. c. 1775 went from Kirkintilloch (grocer) to be tollhouse keeper at Broomhouse.  I have traced 3 of his 4 children including the youngest b. 1810 at Broomhouse, but he, his wife Jane ms Martin and his son Alexander b. 1805 vanish into the mists.

Any info re the Broomhouse toll would be of interest to me.  I imagine the liquor selling permitted at the tollhouses would possibly be a reason for the move from the grocery trade.  I have visited the area and am told that the old tollhouse is now under the roundabout at Daldowie Crematorium.

When his daughter Agnes died in 1876 her father's occupation was given as Tollhouse keeper, but of course he could well have moved to another tollhouse before he died. 

Was there by any chance an epidemic after 1810 pre 1841 that might have carried off all three?

Grateful for any info of any kind re Pauls or Tollhouse at Broomhouse.

Have you got Agnes's Death Certificate?

Where did she die?  What age was she?   Was she married?   Who was the informant?

Questions, questions, questions!! 

Sometimes there can be wee snippets of information previously overlooked which can help.

Parents: John PAUL, Tollkeeper, -- PAUL, ms -- (both deceased).  Cause of death, Heart disease, not certified. Informant John TORRANCE, son, 34 Portland Place, Hamilton.

Son of John PAUL, also John PAUL.  His death cert:

John PAUL, Gen. Lab. (married) d. 04 Sep 1859 at 13 Quarry St., Hamilton aged 50 yrs. Parents: John PAUL, Tollkeeper (dec) and Jane PAUL ms MARTIN (dec). Cause of death, Disease of Heart. Buried Parish Churchyard Hamilton. Informant Jane PAUL her mark, Wife, Reg 07 Sep 1859 at Hamilton.

I know that I am up against the "death before Statutary records" problem, so not expecting much.

Thanks for PM but I have done, gone and seen, pretty well everything I need to as regards the Torrance family. 

My feeble hope is that one day I will turn up something about John PAUL Sr, ie where he came from originally (there are a good few Pauls in the Monklands, Stirlingshire area and none lead definitely to mine).  I would like to trace Alexander Paul the son too. 

I just wondered, from the fact that there is a chap on the site who is keen on Baillieston, whether there might be someone with an indepth knowledge of Broomhouse and/or the doings of tollkeepers and whether they were known to go on into the spirit trade in more depth.  One branch of the Torrance family kept to the licensed grocery business and gravitated to Glasgow but whether that might have been because grandfather John Paul had set himself up there I know not.

The road through Broomhouse was owned by the Glasgow and Shotts Turnpike Trust who let out the toll bars to individuals who collected the tolls. 
There are some records of the Glasgow and Shotts Trust in GCA at the Mitchell but I think they are 'wanting' [incomplete], Call the search room and ask - quote CO1/2/3

Hi Robert

Thank you very, very much.  I shall certainly phone and find out if there is any record.  I have now discovered that the family moved to Hamilton parish, possibly near Limekilnburn/Glassford pre 1817.  Do you perhaps know where there might be any tollhouse records for that area?  The parents and two of their sons, Alexander b. 1805 and Jeremiah b. 1817,  vanish from there.  Apparently there is a gap in Hamilton OPRs about that time.

Any info much appreciated and thank you again.
