Thank you for your excellent information. This builds on  the research I have done so far. I had Fanny's parents as John and Susan Kenny, of Lismore House, Eyrecourt, Co. Galway, Ireland but had not gone back another generation. I think you are correct that Kenny has been mis-transcribed as Remy, particularly since they called their daughter Fanny Kenny Bailey.

Fanny married John Bailey, born 1818 in Bilsington, Kent, England. He was the son of smuggler/convict Samuel Bailey and Sarah Pantry. It is quite clearly written on their Victorian marriage certificate.  Unfortunately as there were quite a few John Bailey's living around Hobart at this time many family researchers have gotten them confused.

The ones we are interested in are the Samuel Bailey and his uncle John Bailey who were both transported to Tasmania. Both of them were already married back in Kent. They applied for permission to have their wives and families come out and join them. Samuel's wife, Sarah, died in 1827 but his two children, John and Elizabeth came out to Tasmania. These families lived mainly around the Oatlands area.

John Bailey, smuggler, born 1792:  wife Catherine and her six children, who also included an Elizabeth and John (born 1820), came out on the "Harmony" in 1829. This John lived around the Broadmarsh/New Norfolk/Teatree area. His wife Catherine died in 1856. He then re-marries a Jane Rodwell, this is an unhappy marriage and she sues him for an order for separate maintenance in 1859. This John Bailey definitely died at Sorell Creek, New Norfolk in 1866. As Fanny Kenny's two youngest children were born in 1866 and 1870 it would be impossible for this John to be the father.

As there were quite a few unrelated convicts called John Bailey who were transported around this time plus the sons of the smugglers called John,  it becomes quite difficult to tell which death record belongs to which John Bailey.

I had tentatively assigned the death in Green Ponds (Melton Mobray) 26 Nov.1883 to John Potten Bailey, son of John and Catherine Bailey, but it could be John Bailey, son of Samuel and Sarah. Unfortunately the death records at this time don't have much info and both men were born within two years of each other. From memory I think the informant on this record was just the funeral director which doesn't help much. As far as I can find John Potten Bailey never married and lived around this area whereas the John Bailey who married Fanny Kenny was living around the Oatlands area, although his sister Elizabeth was living in Melton Mobrary.

So it is quite tricky to untangle it all.

Without sufficient detail on birth/marriage/death certificates it can be very easy to mistakes.  I always check Trove to see if I can find additional information in the death notices or other advertisements of probate etc.  You are right that there is no clear information on the John Bailey who died in Green Ponds in 1883 but in the absence of other information the link I saw was that his daughter Fanny Kenny Bailey's birth was registered in Green Ponds in 1870.

It does seem likely that following Fanny's death in 1875, John would want to move closer to his sister, Elizabeth ,at Green Ponds for help with the children. Although it does seem surprising that there is no mention of his late wife or his children in the newspaper death notice.

 I have started an Xcel spreadsheet recording all the John Bailey's that I can find in the area. Next week I will check all the relevant death records to see if I can find which death is connected to which John. There doesn't seem to be enough deaths listed in the Indexes for the number of John Baileys so it seems likely that some moved interstate.
