Issue Charge at Scotlands People

I have not proven link to Scotland yet

Family tales were that my Douglas watchmakers originated in Scotland
Having a few free credits I thought I would check out one of the wills (I know that James Douglass was son of John Douglass though not where they ccame from.

The will is £5.00 to see, and they slap an issue charge of £2.50
What's this? £7.50 seems a lot to look at 1 will which is most likely nothing to do with me anyway

That's funny, I downloaded a will a few weeks back and I didn't get an issue charge... Were you downloading it or are they sending you a hard copy?

If your will is anything like the one that I got, if it does turn out to have anything to do with you it will be well worth the cost. Mine is 9 pages long and contains a HUGE amount of information.

Is that to pay for the Will? You can't pay for it using SP credits, you have to pay for it separately using credit card. No idea why. The same goes for buying hard copies of birth certs that are currently unavaliable. You can buy them through SP (they post docs to you), but they need to be paid by credit card, not using SP credits.

I know James Douglass was son of John, from apprenticeship, but no idea where James was born

The IGI gives me 11 possible births in Scotland (and more in England) Abt 1733-1740

There are at least 5 wills on scotland's people for John Douglass in likely time period.


Oh well, I was hoping - there isn't anywhere is Scotland that these can be browsed free of charge (just thinking if I had a business trip to Scotland one day)

You can view wills free of charge at the National Archives of Scotland building  situated behind Register House which houses Scotland's People records.
Wills can be viewed on their computer up to 1901 and thereafter you have to give advanced notification and they will dig out what you need see.   I have been able to view wills up to 1939 without payment though you have to pay for pages to be printed off should you want copies.   New readers require a photo when registering.   Let me know if you need any more help, directions etc.
