Henry Edwards b. 1812 London
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 06:08 BST (UK) »
I have been searching for months for Henry Edwards b. 1812 London.
I know that Henry went before the Old Bailey in June,1833 for stealing a handerchief, and was sentenced to 7 years servitude. He was firstly sent to Newgate Prison, before being taken to the Hulks at Chatham on October 5, 1833, and then shipped out on the "Henry Tanner" for Sydney.
When he arrived in Sydney he was assigned the Chief Constable at Parramatta. In 1837 he was working at Emu Plains on the Government Agricultural Farm.
After receiving his Certificate of Freedom, he became a successful businessman and owned brickworks at Newtown & St. Peters.
He married Mary Ann Tye in 1840 in Sydney and they had 12 children.
Sadly Mary Ann died in 1868 in Newtown, and Henry remarried Eliza Goodsell Howard (a widow with 8 children) and they had another 4 daughters.
Oddly enough, checking back to when he arrived in Australia has not been much of a problem.
It's who his parents were, where he was born, etc., that I am finding difficult.
If anyone out there recognises this story, could they please contact me.
Thanking you in anticipation,
Eddo
