Hi my name is Barbara Goodbody & I am in Toronto ON Canada.  My grandfather was John Goodbody and he was born in 1879 in Yorkshire.
I am trying to find info on any of his family.  He had a brother Fred Goodbody born 1888 in Pontefract district.  I know the family is Baptist background.
I was wondering if you could locate any info on his brother.

Thank you

Barb

Hi Barbara

Sorry it has taken a while to reply.  I have done a little research on Fred Goodbody and this is what I have found:

I have looked at the All Saints, Pontefract baptisms and there are no Goodbody's listed.  As it seems Fred was born in Castleford then the church's in that area would be the ones to look at, possibly All Saints.

I have found Fred on the 1911 census living at 58 Grange St, New Wortley, Bramley, West Riding Yorkshire.  This is the particulars of the census:

Ben Sanderson, Head, Married, Male, 26, Occupation: Cartman, born Leeds, Yorkshire
Clare Sanderson, Wife, Married 2 years, Female, 27, Occupation: Leather Dresser, born Barnsley, Yorkshire
Ben Sanderson, Son, Male, 1 year, born Leeds, Yorkshire
Fred Goodbody, Boarder, Single, Male, 23, Occupation: Labour, born Castleford, Yorkshire.

I have found your grandfather John Goodbody with his parents and siblings on Ancestry.co.uk on the 1891 census - ref: RG12/3764/144/20 under the surname Brown.  Other than the surname all the other information ties in with the 1901 census.  It looks like your grandfather was born in Swinton, Yorkshire.

Also listed on the 1891 census was a William Edward.  I have found a burial record for him, I can email you a copy if you wish.  He was buried on 22 April 1891 at the age of 13 months, this would have been only a few weeks after the census was taken.

I hope this information has been of help to you.  If you wish me to do any further research please let me know.

Best wishes
Leanne

Leanne:

I thank you for checking into my Grandad's past.

John Goodbody, wife Henrietta Goodbody, children Lilian, Minnie & Elsie left England and came to Canada.  I have tried checking out the Canadian Passenger List and cannot locate anything.  They came over just after the sinking of the Titanic which was in 1912. I know they were here in 1915 as my Grandad enlisted in WWI from Canada.  I have been informed from family members that they came over 1912 to 1913.  The family settled in Toronto, Ontario.

Can you help me or pass me on to someone who might be of some help.

Thank you

Barb

Hi Barbara

I have looked on the British passenger list and I have found John Goodbody and his family.  They travelled 3rd class from Bristol on 15 May 1912 bound to Quebec, Canada.  They were part of 1075 passengers that sailed on the vessel Royal George with the company Royal Line.

John Goodbody was a 32 year old Farm Labourer at this time and travelled on ticket no 7642 along with his 32 year old wife Henrietta and daughters Lily (ten), Minnie (eight) and three year old Elsie.

Regards
Leanne

Leanne:

Thank you for the info on the immigration of John Goodbody.  Another part of the puzzle has been put into place.

Take care
