help with a Danish NIELSEN
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 10:48 BST (UK) »
Please help if you can

I have a Herman NIELSEN born in Copenhagen Denmark in 1858, marrying Mary MILLER in Scotland in 1881 then moving to New Zealand soon after with their son Herman Meinert NIELSEN.

On the marriage cert they list Herman's parents as Meinert and Karen NIELSEN. Herman being the informant. I also found other children to these parents (including Herman) on IGI as well as finding their details on a Danish census,

On Herman's death certificate the undertaker listed Herman's parents as Christian Nielson and Ludi VICA - please let me know if there is another possibility for her name.

the occupation is listed on both as being "engineer" - this also checks out on the census

any help appreciated

I don't know if this will be of any help, but are you sure that you have got the right Herman Nielsen death cert.? It seems strange that the parents names are so different from the wedding cert. Anyway, I can give you a name for the female, which is Ludvika (female form of Ludvig).
Hope that helps.
Regards.

First scan looks to be from the marriage in Scotland (1881) where parents' details should have been provided by the groom. Details on death certificate do look worryingly different but perhaps informant didn't know correct names?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Herman Nielsen was:

Born 18 September 1858 - Trinitatis, Copenhagen, Denmark - parents on birth attached

Married 14 February 1881 - Gorbals, Lanarch, Scotland - first image attached on first post. The marriage date on all of his childrens birth certs verify that this is the correct couple

Died 8 May 1922 - Wellington, New Zealand - I think I have come to the conclusion that the names "Christian" and "Ludivica" may have been middle names. The informant was the undertaker but must have consulted Mary the widow. The undertaker has also spelt the surname the English "Neilson" instead of the Danish "Nielsen"

Thank you

John

P.s. Is someone able to tell me what the word is in between "Karen" and "Nielsen" - it looks like "Ludi"

Hi John, that is an easy one, the word means born, so Karen nee Nielsen.
