Else Family of Ashover
« on: Saturday 26 February 05 20:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi everybody,  In this line of the family I have gone back as far as my 7 x Gt Grandparents but have now hit a brick wall.
William Else of Miltown Derbys born circa 1685 married Elizabeth Heathcote born circa 1688 of Foard, Derbys at South Wingfield Church on the 25 August 1709 at South Wingfield.
I know of 4 children, Mary, Dorothy, William( 6x Gt Grandfather) and finally John and all of them were born in Ashover. Any help out there would be much appreciated. Harry

I think I can help as they are my ancestors too!  William Else married Elizabeth Heathcote 25 August 1709 in South Wingfield, Derbyshire.  They were married by special license.  They had children Dorothy, John, Mary and William (I am a descendent of William).  However, the Else/Ellse/Elce family lived mainly in North Wingfield area and many can be traced via the parish records of North Wingfield rather than the parish of Ashover.

The son (my ancestor)  William (baptised 1 April 1714 in North Wingfield, Derbyshire) married a Hannah Berisford on 1 November, 1735 in Matlock, Derbyshire.

The Else/Ellse family  lived around North Wingfield area (Clay Lane in particular) for many years until they moved to Chesterfield.

i have quite a lot of detail of the Ellse family if you wish to contact me.

I, too, believe that I am probably descended from William ELSE and Elizabeth HEATCOATE of Ashover, as follows:

William ELSE m: 1709 Sth Wingfield Elizabeth HEATHCOATE
|- William ELSE bapt. 2 Feb 1716/17 Ashover m?: 1742/43 Bonsall Rachel BUCKLEY
   |- William ELSE bapt. 3 Aug 1746 Ashover m: 1766 Ashover Grace BIRKS
      |- Isaac ELSE bapt. 4 Jul 1784 Ashover m: 1807 Sutton-in-Ashfield NTT Catherine MOSELEY
         |- Grace ELSE bapt. 19 Mar 1810 Sutton-in-Ashfield NTT m: 1835 George HAZARD (1810-1868)

This is a provisional interpretation of various entries in the IGI, as I haven't yet managed to look at the Ashover PRs.  However, Grace ELSE (1810-1877) and George HAZARD (1810-1868) were my 3g-grandparents.  I would be keen to hear from and exchange information withe other descendants of this family.  Please get in touch by email.

Regards and best wishes,

I came across this thread and realised that the Else family is part of my lineage.
William Else (1685 -1738) married to Elizabeth Heathcote is my 7 times great grandfather.
That is to set the scene, but after following the line back to Richard/Richardus Else, alive at the end of the sixteenth century,I have discovered a mystery.
I have been deliberately vague about the birth date for R Else, it was thought to be 1603 by another family member but I discovered a notification of a marriage that took place between Richard Else and Ann Gibbons on 02 June 1603.
Richard had a son William Else bapt 24 April 1639. Mariae (sic) is recorded as the mother. - A mistress? I can't find the connection. Now the mystery: Richard Else was buried 24 Feb 1639 Ann Gibbons was buried 16 Feb 1639, both in South Wingfield. Was it a tragic coincidence that left Mariae holding the baby.
As I am new to this ancestral sleuthing, I may have made errors but I would love to hear from anyone with any thoughts, comments or explanations. Rgds Zanuda.
