Obituary for Frank Griffiths Hollis 1868-1896
« on: Friday 10 July 09 19:37 BST (UK) »
DEATH OF MR. FRANK G. HOLLIS

By the death of Mr. Frank Griffiths Hollis, youngest
son of Colonel Hollis, of this town, one of the most
promising musicians owning Northampton as birthplace,
has been removed.  When quite a child the deceased
gentleman, was only 28 years of age, showed un-
usual musical ability, and this was accentuated as he
advanced through youth into manhood.  His education
was acquired at Bedford County School where he
showed conspicuous ability, and he afterwards was a
student of the Royal Academy of Music, London.  He
there became a silver medallist, a Potter Exhibitioner,
and a Santley prize holder, after which he was ad-
vanced to a sub-professorship.  He was also created
an Associate of the Royal College of Organists.  Some
time since Mr Hollis married Miss Blanche Powell,
also an Academician, and noted for her beautiful sing-
ing, and with her help he has at various times given
successful concerts in Northampton and other centres,
his very able and clever manipulation of the pianoforte
affording keen enjoyment to all who heard him.  The
deceased gentleman was also appointed organist at the
Annexe of St Mary's, Berkeley-square, London;  and
was highly respected by his numerous pupils.  The
circumstances attending the death of the deceased present
some peculiarly sad features.  Just a week to-day he
was in Northampton instructing several of his pupils,
and when he went to his home, 154, Elgin Avenue,
Maida Vale, London W.,  at night complained of feeling
unwell.  He was worse the next day and his doctor
was called in,  and on Wednesday a specialist.  The
latter gave a very cheering account of Mr. Hollis, and
little anxiety was felt.  On Saturday Mr. Hollis dressed
with the intention  of going out, and went to his bath-
room; but almost immediately fainted and shortly
afterwards expired, the cause of death being syncope
or failure of the heart's action.

SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. FRANK HOLLIS --  The news of
the sudden death of Mr. Frank Griffiths Hollis, the
youngest son of Colonel Hollis, of Northampton, will be
received with deep regret by his many friends in this
district.  The sad event took place on Saturday after-
noon, at his residence, 154, Elgin-avenue, Maida Vale,
London, under very painful circumstances.  He had been
ailing for the last two or three weeks, and a specialist,
whom he consulted, assured him that his illness was not
dangerous.  As he felt a little better on Saturday after-
noon he got up to dress to go to a choir practice at the
church where he is organist.  He went to his bath-room,
and a short time afterwards was found dead in the room.
The cause of death was syncope.  The deceased gentle-
man, who was only 28 years of age, was a gifted and
successful musician.  He was organist at St Mary's
Church  (an annexe of St George's, Hanover square),
London, an Associate of the Royal College of Music and
the Royal College of Organists.  He was a silver medal-
list of the Royal Academy of Music, a Potter exhibitioner,
and a Santley prize holder.  He married Miss Blanche
Powell, an accomplished vocalist, and a great favourite
with Northampton audiences, for both she and her hus-
band have prometed concerts and taken part in a great
number of high-class concerts in the town, and always
delighted the large audience which assembled to hear
them.  Mrs Hollis may be assured of the most heart-
felt sympathy from her numerous Northampton friends,
both public and private, in her great bereavement.  The
deceased will be greatly missed by his many pupils in
the town, whom he used to visit regularly every week.
